No Endoscopy only Upper GI

Recommended Posts

Hi all!!

So my surgeon scheduled me for an endoscopy this past Wednesday. I received a phone call the morning before from the hospital to pre-register me and to tell me the amount that I had to pay through my insurance. Well, apparently my insurance policy sucks and I was told that in order to do the endoscopy I would have to pay $1,761.00!!!

I immediately called my surgeon's office and told them that I could not pay that much for that type of procedure. They told me not to worry and that they would speak with the surgeon to see what he says. So they just called me back and said that I can do without the endoscopy but that I needed to do the Upper GI.

So that lead me to my question....If I was originally asked to do the endoscopy, shouldn't they still need it?? Will the Upper GI be sufficient enough for the surgeon to see what he needs to see?

Has anyone just had the Upper GI and not endoscopy?

Thanks in advance!!

I did... My surgeons office said that they always do an endoscopy, got my quote and everything...so when I went and only had the order for the UGI I asked why and they said because I didn't have reflux or other problems that would warrant a more detailed test and that all that was needed was the UGI... Still kinda wonder about it, but they seem ok w/ the results and I have never had issues w/reflux or ulcers or anything else like that... Hope this helps...

No, I do not have a lapband; in fact, I've never had any type of surgery or health issues.

Could that be the reason why?

The two tests can tell you the same things such as ulcers and hiatal hernia, etc. One is an ex ray after you swallow the barium. The other is where they put the camera done your throat.

My surgeon said I could have either one.

My doc didn't order an endoscopy at all. I had just the Chest x-ray and Upper GI. He said that was sufficient because I had no history of GERD or reflux.

He said it was the same for the sleep study..no history of sleep apnea, no need for the study Same for the pulmonary test. Didn't have that either. As long as my BMI was under 50 didn't need the pulmonary study.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
