While surfing today I found your website and think that it will be helpful in making my decision. I meet with the surgeon on Friday to discuss what type of procedure I will have and my mind is set on the lap band. I have questions for those who have had the surgery. Does the gradual weight loss of the lap band make a difference in the amount of loose skin that you have?

I havent been banded yet, but it seems alot of it depends on age and how much elasticity your skin has. There is one girl on here that is younger and she says she had more extra skin than she would have guessed. Losing it slower helps tho. I have been lurking here for over a year. The people on here are very helpful and full of so much knowledge that a Dr would never have. Good Luck

Welcome, Marcia. I don't know too much about why some people end up with more loose skin than others. I think it has a lot to do with age and genetics.

How did your meeting with the surgeon go, by the way?

I used to belong to a bariatric support group and no matter which form of bariatric surgery was performed, the belly hang was the same (for the amount of weight lost).

Thank you for your responses. I met with the surgeon and decided that lap band is the way to go for me. I am currently under going all the tests necesseary to begin the procedure, but my insurance requires that I have a second opinion. I have to see how that goes.

Marcia, it really matter on how much you have to lose. I had to lose 80-100 lbs. I will definitely need a tummy tuvck after this. Julie

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
