Is it possible to get All the protein with out supplements?

Recommended Posts

HEllo, I am 3 weeks post op and I was wondering if anyone could get all the Protein only with regular foods (not Protein Shakes, or adding Protein Powder to foods, etc). In the near future I will like to get all or almost all my protein by eating regular foods but I don't know if this is possible or not. Will apreciate some of your experiences and ideas. Thanks,

Yes it is. I do drink hot cocoa that has Protein in it, but it does NOT have that nasty "protein" taste!!! But before that I ate high protein foods b/c I cannot tolerate the protein shakes/powder.

Yes, I don't utilize Protein Shakes at all. I tried them twice post op and it didn't work out for me. I also avoid Protein Bars, because they are sliders for me. I eat chicken, pork, fish, beef, cheese, cottage cheese, eggs etc...

If you focus on animal products. Lean meats, cheeses, milk, etc... Although you can expect to be constipated. I did a few days of this, but struggled to get the calories in. I was having a gag reflex to the Protein Shakes flavored was too sweet and unflavored had a smell that gagged me. Trust me I tried several options. I'm back to being able to have one Protein shake a day. I try to be creative with them. I hope that was helpful.

To do that you have to be very diligent in reading labels. Eating meat or animal products and legumes can put a huge dent in how much Protein you need daily...But now since I read every label as I shop I have found other foods that are high in Protein as well...There are seeds and nuts and some crackers and even some types of cracker chips made out of legumes..The possibilities are endless.

I only use a shake if I am sick or a Protein Bar if I am on the run...Otherwise it all comes from other sources..Hope this helps! :)

Yup, you can do it, never had a Protein shake yet that likes me or vice versa! Know what your best Protein options as and, asRJ's/Beginning says, be creative in where you find your protein so that it doesn't get boring and that you can get it all in.

To avoid the Constipation problem, I kept on top of drinking my Water and would exceed the minimum required - fingers crossed, managed to avoid constipation...

But yes, you can do this without shakes... for me, it meant I could continue with normal life, including eating out, from early on.

Yes, absolutely, my surgeon and nutritionist expect it. One of the books I read said never to drink your calories. I consider a shake to be a drink.

Other countries where the sleeve has been performed for many years before the U.S. Only recommend whole foods. I don't know the specifics. I see doctors now profiting from the Protein Shakes, so of course they'll endorse the product. whey Protein can be found in bulk and much cheaper than the costly pre-flavored packages. I wish I would have know that before I bought the darn things. I spent a small fortune getting prepped for the liquid diet pre and post op.

It is definitely possible. I don't drink Protein Shakes, but I usually get in at least 60 grams of Protein per day. I eat a lot of tilapia, eggs, cottage cheese, string cheese, light laughing cow cheese, and an occasional tablespoon of reduced fat Peanut Butter, or cup of nonfat milk.

I'll add to the list:

  • meatballs (beef or turkey, low fat)
  • Chili (with or without meat)
  • Unflavored Kefir (Trader Joe's) very high in protein
  • Icelandic yogurt (higher Protein even than greek yogurt - Whole Foods)
  • Low fat cheese
  • A glass of nonfat milk before bed ....mmmmmm
  • Hemp powder or seeds, chia seeds and the like added to Soups and sauces
  • My 10 calorie rule: a gram of protein should not "cost" more than 10 calories. For example, something with 100 calories must have at least 10 grams of protein. My best options are ones like low fat deli ham with 20 calories and 5 grams of protein per slice.

Cottage cheese is a great soft food Protein source. As for later on, I prefer fish to beef because it's easier for me to eat more of....poultry is second but still not as easy as fish. cheese is also easy for me to get down. I think I probably eat more Protein than most folks here....close to 150 grams a day. My total daily calories ranges between 1800-2000. I eat quite a bit but I eat clean healthy foods mostly. I also exercise alot which I why I eat so much. I do still drink a Protein shake from time to time but only because I like them and they are convenient....not because I need to.

Edit.....also, mustard egg salad is another great soft food protein source.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
