Hey guys,

I am trying to start my journey to getting a sleeve.

I've struggled with my weight all my life. I am now 22 years old. I am 172cm (about 5 foot 7). And here comes the hard part. I weigh 150kg (330lbs). Which means I have a BMI of 50.

I have desperately been trying to change my life, and I do so well for a short time, and then something happens and I slip up and pile on more than before.

After a fair bit of research into the procedure and the results others have had (good and bad) I have decided that this is the course I want to travel down, the benefits for me far outweigh the risks.

I live in Melbourne, Australia, and this afternoon I am heading to my local GP to see for some kind of referral to a doctor that can help me achieve this.

I have a couple questions for Melbourne Sleevers and sleevers in general.

How did you get the ball rolling? And once the ball was rolling, how long did it take you to get booked in for surgery?

In Melbourne, who did you see?

How much was the gap? Did your private cover any part of it? From what I have been reading I think I may be looking at a gap of approximately $5,000? I have Medibank private (although won't be able to do anything until end of Feb '14 because of the 1 year waiting period), and I have e-mailed them to get a general idea if they cover a portion and they want me to pretty much fill out a questionnaire and have my surgery booked before they say yes or no.

I have no doubt I will have more questions, but for now I'll start with that.

Thanks :)

Where is Melbourne at? I am in Washington state. The first thing we have to do here is got to a seminar. The surgeon that u choose usually has an informational seminar. Then u find out if your insurance covers it, what the requirements are and start jumpin threw those hoops.

Dont know if that helped but good luck!

Thanks, I'm in Melbourne, Australia :)

I've read heaps of things on what those in America need to do to get the surgery, but not so much for Australians. I have to do research on my mobile so that does limit me.

Hopefully seeing the doctor today helps point me in the direction. I just don't trust all these websites that are promising surgery.

Hi Anna :) Good for you for doing your research. I know I researched all my options and the sleeve seemed the best for me. Turns out I was right!

We do have Australian friends on the board every now & then....might I suggest doing a patient search (on the right hand side of the menu bar at the top of the page). Maybe you could inbox someone in your area & find a buddy. I found someone early on who had the same surgeon as me. She is amazing! Im so glad to count her as a friend. I hope you can find someone like that who can mentor you through the process.

I wish you the best!

Hi Anna, I'm from melb and was sleeved in may this year. I am also with medibank but I was a band to sleeve and didn't have to pay anything for my sleeve as the band was faulty.

I went through mr McHenry at lap surgery Australia in boronia. They are great and have a great network of drs, specialist, dietician s and nurses for all of your appts.

To get the ball rolling I would first go have an appt at lap surgery. They will fill you in on what you need to do with medibank and other appts if you're a candidate for surgery.

I hope I've answered all you're questions but I'm happy to ask any more if you have them:)

Hi Anna, I am on the Gold Coast. The first thing I did was get a referral to a surgeon from my GP. My GP actually did a lot of research for me about types of Weight Loss Surgery and the best surgeon for me. Otherwise there is a weight loss surgery centre here where you don't need a referral but you do usually have to go to seminars and whatnot.

The next thing I did was down load every book I could find onto my iPad so that when I went to the surgeon I knew what to ask and was fairly well educated about the surgery. I also watched some clips on YouTube. You can search gastric sleeve and hundreds come up. The next thing I did was join this forum. I have met some other Sleevers recently and really learned a lot from them, I found them through this forum. I also have quite a few favourites on this forum, some in Australia, some in the UK and a lot in the USA. Good luck. Hopefully some Melbournites will find your post and help with actual people to see!

You will see that your story is similar to lots of other people and we all care and empathise with you

Jen.

That sounds great, I will definitely get on to that. It would be nice to have someone to talk to about this. I don't intend on telling anyone except my partner and my mum. Both who are very supportive about what I want. I know others won't be as supportive so I would rather not give them an opportunity to express their opinions. Thank you Momonanomo :)

Thanks k8ee, I will google them today and look them up. I've been very cautious about all these pop up websites I am finding so it makes it a bit difficult to sort through genuine from fake. I will be looking them up and see what they can help me with, and start doing my research on the doctors. :)

Hi Jen, I was supposed to go to the doctors yesterday to discuss a referral, however, things got in the way and I will be going this morning instead. Unfortunately I don't think the GP will be that willing to hand over a referral, much less do any research for me, so I'll have to do the research myself. This is a bulk bill walk in clinic and I have never seen one doctor twice in a row, they rotate the doctors around that much. It's hard to find just one GP to stick to because they don't last that long, and the ones that have are all private and cost an arm and a few legs. It took me a year to get a referral to get my tonsils removed and a grommet that has been in my ear over 5 years removed as well. I suspect the doctor will want me to go down the dietitian path, again. This is why I'm taking my mum, back up to make sure I don't get rolled so easily. Haha.

I'm currently reading The Big Book on the Gastric Sleeve and I'm finding it very insightful.

Thank you very much for your advice. I have a few things to go off now on this post, hopefully I can get this big ball rolling!

You'll want to find a surgeon close to home then with all of the appts you will need to attend pre/post surgery.

Thank you.

I finally managed to get to the doctors today for the referral.

I thought I would need to beg for the referral but nope! He gave me the referral without hesitation!

I now have my first referral for professor nottle in sydenham Victoria which is 20 mins from me!

So now I'm on my way home to do my research on him and see how other people's experiences have been with him.

One step in the right direction!

That's fantastic. Once you find the right surgeon for you then everything will happen so fast (even if you are not planning on getting it done until next year). Most of my appts etc took about a month or so (but spread out over 3 months) but then you will have paperwork for the hospital etc to complete and return too, and all of that takes time. Just read up on the surgeon and look on this site too for the surgeon on threads.

Congratulations on starting your new journey!

Thank you!

I have just booked in for Friday 15th Nov.

I have read that this doctor does try to push for the Lap Band over anything else, so I am just going to stick to my guns.

Just because this is the first doctor I see doesn't mean I have to go with him. I want to be comfortable with who does my surgery.

I'm really excited and nervous!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
