2 weeks post op and issues with real food

Recommended Posts

I'm just over 2.5 weeks post op. My surgeon cleared me for full liquids, puréed Soups, yogurt and cottage cheese 7 days ago. I find that if I eat anything in the normal food category-soups, cottage cheese, etc. I can only eat a few bites (which I'm totally fine with) but I break out in a full body sweat, I get dizzy and feel like crap after I eat... Then quickly have to run to the restroom and have mild diarrhea almost immediately. Is this normal?? I'm confused! I thought bridging over to more normal foods was going to be so easy! I certainly want them! But it's proving to be quite the challenge. Anyone else in the same boat? Or have you come through it and have advice? Thank you!

At 3 weeks, my NUT said I will be able to start eating 1/3 to 1/2 cup per meal. Prior to 3 weeks, she recommends 2-4 TBL of food. As your body is still healing, I would recommend focusing most of your nutrition on shakes right now, and just letting your body practice swallowing food again. It might be a case of too much too soon?

Sounds kind of like dumping syndrome. My NUT told me to try new food one at a time so u know what made you sick if it does happen. If you don't tolerate it, wait a week and try again.

You are dumping. Sounds like it's mostly with dairy products so it could be the natual lactose causing it. Go dairy free for a while. You can find yogurt and cheeses made with soy and nut milks that are actually really good. It's not uncommon to become lactose intolerant after surgery.

Yes, it should improve. Some of the Sx might be from an irritation of the vagus nerve???

Thanks all! I feel like it may all be too much too soon mixed with the lactose intolerant spin too most likely. I'm going to try to just stick to my drinks for a while and see if I feel better with just those. Last nights was watery pea Soup (no dairy) and it was awful. I start back to work tomorrow and will be happy to just have the Protein Drinks and focus on getting my fluids and Proteins and give my body more time to deal and heal.

I am also two weeks out. I experienced this once I moved to full liquids. I just moved to soft foods and it has gotten a little better. I have found that my Protein drinks send me to the bathroom.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
