You can drink as much as you want before. It should just flow right thru,

I know I can't drink for an hour after I eat, but what about before?

Well there is a LOT of misinformation going on now about not drinking and eating at the same time. When I got my band over 8 years ago, we were given the 30/30 rule to drink up to 30 minutes before a meal and not drink until after 30 minutes after we ate.

NOW -- based on new evidence that MANY lap band surgeons and nutritionist are not aware of is waiting to drink IS NOT ADVISABLE - BUT CAN IN FACT CAUSE LAP BAND COMPLICATIONS.

Could this be why the lap band complication rate in the US is so high? Could be, there is evidence by the most skilled lap band surgeon who created the green zone that waiting to drink will actually CAUSE esophageal dilation because the food must be washed through each time we eat and NOT sit in the esophagus causing to stretch, food should always pass through the band and not sit for hours or days inside esophagus.

Also I do find that if I eat and drink with my new band, I still get satisfied.

Please read this article on this subject in its entirely, I also gave this article to my own surgeon for him to review it because MANY US surgeons follow the Green zone chart to prevent complications with the band.

One of the key lessons learned from Burton’s studies was that each bite of food should pass across the band completely before another bite is swallowed. There is no pouch or small stomach above the band and there should never be food sitting there waiting.

Thanks NaNa. I'm going to show this to my surgeon. I wonder if he'll agree with it. It makes sense to me, but I wonder what he'll say.

I always wait 30 minutes and have never had any problem. Before eating, I drink what I want.

I'm going to discuss this with my doc too - I am one month post op and have little to no restriction and definitely feel better if I drink while I'm eating. I'm following the rules and eating primarily Protein and veggies and it certainly feels better to drink while I eat. I've done both but like the drinking much better. I am apprehensive because I believe that once i get filled this won't be the case - but for now I'm fully aware that this might change - NaNa - I appreciate the articles b/c it's great info to share with my doc to hopefully get his professional recommendations - because as we can all see from this forum - there are endless opinions and methods, doesn't seem like any are consistent across the board.

Bottom line - I want to eat a small amount, hunger satisfied and lose weight - all while maintaining optimal health - lol :)

it varies to person per doctor per whatever as you can see..

i drink right up to eating, dont drink while eating and wait 20 to 30 minutes after..

i guess do what your dr advises/suggests you to do..

I drink right to I start eating....I do not follow any specific "Rules", but I do listen to my band....I CANNOT drink while eating or it will overfill my pouch and come right back up.....and I do not care to dilate - stretch my pouch, which is generally associated with some pain.....another sure sign not safe to drink yet.

Drinking after I finish eating varies anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes, depending upon what I ate and if it is still in my pouch....softer, more liquid type foods obviously pass faster than all solids....

Little sips at first and I can tell immediately whether it is safe to continue or not....by the feedback the band gives me....

And yes, I have drank 30-40 minutes once or twice after eating and it came right back up with a little food that had not yet passed.

Dr.'s will tell you 60 minutes...a very safe amount of time for everyone, until you get to know your band, and what it can will and will not do....

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
