Hi all I get banded on Tuesday my pre op I've struggled not eating only had a few days having one shake and mainly Protein or salad. Thursday was my 40th birthday I had a party last night a lot to eat and drink. Now freaking out don't have much time to just drink liquid now very disappointed in myself. I hope my surgery goes alright. Does anyone know the extra risks I've put myself under.?

Do the best you can....

I would say for myself that if I could have lost all that pre-op weight, why in the world would I want to go through surgery?

So yes, it was very hard to do...but I kept telling myself that this surgery is the most important step I can take and I was not going to do anything to jeopardize it...

Now, all Dr.'s are different...My Dr. did not care what I ate or drank, ONLY thing he wanted to see was that I had to loose X # of lbs within 2 weeks of the surgery or he would postpone it...didn't care how I did it, as long as I did....having said that, Protein shakes was the easiest way to do it...but I did cheat, eating regular food, but keeping a close eye on the scale so as not to have my surgery postponed....

But that was Me and my Dr...if you want this surgery you need to do what your Dr. wants you to do...

Hi there, I'm getting banded Tuesday, too! Happy 40th birthday -- what a great gift to yourself. If you are concerned about whether you've jeopardized your health by not adhering to the pre-op diet you should call your doctor tomorrow morning and inquire. Many people don't have pre-op diets but every one is different and there are a variety or pre-surgery protocols. The purpose as I understand it is to shrink the liver so it's easier to install the band but I also suspect there are other rationales, like getting people off of sugar, diet soda, etc. so they'll be successful with the band later. Good luck to you -- keep us posted. Best wishes for a happy, healthy 40th year -- you are on your way!

My doctor required that I lose some weight before surgery. There was no certain amount I was suppose to lose just had to use. So I did stray from my liquid diet a couple time because I was so incredibly hungry some days. They explained to me that it was important to lose because of where the liver sits it has to be moved to place the band and if no weight is lost it's harder to move it for the operation.

There is such a huge variation on what all the doctors require. My pre-op diet was 1,200 calories/day; low fat & low carb. Not NO carb, but just lower complex/whole grain choices. Did I stick to it? Hardly. Please understand that I'm not promoting ignoring doctor's orders, I'm just being honest. I pulled back dramatically on what I was eating, but probably stayed more in the 1400-1500 range. I did manage to lose 5 pounds. My doctor said that he wasn't as concerned with me, because (in his world) my weight wasn't off the charts, and based on my body type, didn't think my liver would be an issue.

Bliiing, I've heard everything on here from doctors attempting to do the surgery, but stopping the procedure when they get in there & see the liver is too fatty, to docs who didn't require a pre-op diet, where surgery was done without issue. There is a wide spectrum of possibilities with this, so I would say.......just stick to nothing but liquids until Tuesday. To put your mind at rest, call your doctor's office in the morning and communicate your concerns. I don't know you or your doctor, but if I were a betting woman, I'd say......you should be fine.

Whole idea behind the pre-op diet is not to lose weight. It's all about shrinking your liver for safer and easier surgery. Liver lays directly over the stomach and the surgeon has to flip it up in order to place the band. How your Doctor will approach it is really unknown. Some Docs do not enforce a diet and some do. I have even heard stories about Surgeons going in and finding the liver too fatty to work around safely so they abort the surgery. I am not trying to scare you as I have stated every doctor is different.

I am worried they will get in there, say my liver is too fat- then BILL me for all the operating room time, etc...

BUT I promised to do all I could to shrink the liver as he explained to me will make this surgery much safer for me my BMI is 60-61 so I do it and pray for no craving and more sleep to take my mind off. My surgery is in 13 days

you can do what you think you (cant do)

the first 4 or 5 days were hard...my ole man got tired of me whining that i was starving and woe is me

and he told me to woman up...that i wanted this surgery and it was up to me to do whatever i could to make it happen...i learned, as you will, that you are stronger mentally then you think you are....hang in there...

if you think you can, you will

if you really want this surgery and to lose weight, then do what you have to do..

my starting BMI was 62....so yeah, it can be done :)

Oh I know it, its just a little rough but it won't be forever. Besides if I think this is bad just wait till I'm on the clear liquid diet after surgery. Lol it will be fine. I got on the scale this morning and lost 2 lbs since Friday! I need to do everything in my power to make this better.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
