advice needed: getting rings resized

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone-

i'm a few months into my banded life, and all sorts of things are going great in terms of being waaaaay more active (i've become a gym rat), and while I'm not in the Green Zone yet, I'm getting closer. I started at 315, and just recently crossed the 50lbs lost marker, and am 263 - with a goal weight of 185.

Here's my question: when should i get my wedding rings resized? i have an engagement ring and 2 bands. They are already pretty much falling off - so much so I don't wear my engagement ring for fear of losing it. I kinda hate to resize them now only to do it again in the future as I continue getting healthier, but I don't want them to slip off/stop wearing them.

Have any of you gone through this? What did you decide? is there a middle-ground to make them more snug (imagining the way girls at my HS used to wrap thread around their boyfriend's class rings to make them fit) that looks decent?

thanks!!

I would wait to have them re-sized until you are at your goal weight. I've lost 118 pounds with 27 to go. Currently wearing my wedding ring on middle finger till I have it re-sized.

I have had mine resized 3 times....and I do not expect to have them made larger in the future....

If you prefer, the jeweler does have a little sleeve he clamps inside to reduce the size, that can hold you over for a little while...the clamp / crimp part is on your palm side so it is not noticeable....

Go for it girl! Get it re sized and then do it again when your at goal! Or even again if you need to.

My husband and I had the same problem, and have both had our rings re sized once already and we haven't hit the 50 pound mark just yet.

I love my jewelry and paid lots of $ to enjoy them, usually sizing down is not as much money has having to add and size up. So go for it girl and sell the hunk of gold back to the jeweler for the cost of the sizing and resetting of the diamond. Or save it and make a pinky ring from it later!!

there are some small clear plastic things to put on the back of your ring. I tried them years back.

Personally, I would wait until you're sure your fingers aren't going to shrink anymore. Every time you get it sized, it weakens the integrity of the band itself because they have to cut and weld it to do it. It's best to have to size rings sparingly.

My ring size has dropped from an 8 to a 5 1/2. I can't even wear my size 8 rings on middle finger because even my middle finger is a size 7.

I would wait.... I'm in the same boat right now. I'm down 54 pounds, and yesterday, practically shook my wedding rings off my hand. Somedays they're looser than others, but I'm going to wait.......for the exact reason Missy stated.

On another "happy" note..... My bras are too big, too! But the ones I wear are expensive, so I'm waiting to drop my last 21 pounds. I may buy them a bit sooner than that, but I want to be close enough so I don't have to buy them two more times :D

Good problems to have, huh?? :)

these are great problems to have! i went for a bra fitting a few weeks ago thinking i must have shifted, but for better or worse, i'm still clockin in at a H cup. the band size is slowly going down tho, but for now I can be content with the tightest hook setting - and i can wear it all day long - which did not used to be true :)

i so appreciate all the advice! i'm gonna look into one of these temporary suggestions. my rings are all family rings (that's what we do - you get a family ring at engagement/wedding, and then 40 years later when you can afford it, you buy your own new rings and give the family ones to the next person getting married) so i'm loathe to do anything that would hurt 'em!

I just kept on moving mine over a finger. I went from a size 10 to a 5 in rings. And in spite of gaining some weight back my fingers stayed small. I didn't want to resize them constantly and risk ruining them. Also one of the rings I had couldn't be sized down to a 5 due to the way it was designed.

FYI: Always ask for the chunk of gold/platinum/silver/etc cut out of your ring when it's resized as it does rightfully belong to you.

I love that idea!!! Don't do anything to hurt them :) Your a gem and deserve one for all your hard work and love of your family!

I bought costume jewelry rings to wear temporarily because I didn't want to risk losing my wedding set. I actually get lots of compliments on the "fake rings"... No one knows the difference;)

So funny! I was actually going to write a similar post just now! I just tonight moved my wedding set to my right hand because on the left the ring keeps spinning around between the 2 outside bands, and it's annoying!!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
