What is your food capacity?

Recommended Posts

I got the plication surgery 8 weeks ago and have a larger than expected capacity. I can easily eat 8-12 ounces of food now. If drinking beverages, I can easily drink 8 ounces in four large sips and feel fine.

What is your intake and how far out are you?

Well I could drink easily after too but I can't remember how much food I could eat then... I'm 9 mos out now... I still try to estimate and eat about a cup of food, Protein first... And I am full. But I can eat a lot more than that if I want to or if I eat slider foods. I ate 3/4 of a six inch from subway about a month ago, bread and all...not bad considering I used I eat a foot long and chips and maybe a cookie and a drink. Still if I would have minused the bread I know I would have been full... Hope this helps? Once we are healed our restriction is more than in the beginning so we still have to make the right food choices;)

I am already 8 weeks Post op and I am surprised at how much food I can eat now. I even had a little piece of steak a few nights ago and had no problems. So far there is nothing I cannot eat. I can eat salads, bread, meats and rice, Nothing bothers my stomach. Because of me being able to eat anything my weight loss has slowed down. I am learning that this surgery is just a nice tool to have but I still have to make healthy choices if I want to get the weight off. So far I am down 28 pounds since the surgery and I feel awesome. I just need to lose about 30 more pounds and then I will reach my goal. I started exercising this week so hopefully I can start dropping weight again.

" I am learning that this surgery is just a nice tool to have but I still have to make healthy choices if I want to get the weight off"

So in retrospect, are you saying the surgery wasn't necessary?

Well for me I love the fact that I cannot eat as much as I used to. You still have to make good choices no matter what kind of surgery you have. Weight Loss Surgery is not a quick fix to your eating problems. It is something that can aid in your weight loss. I have absolutely no regrets about having the surgery. For me it has been a blessing. I am down 35 pounds in a little over 3 months and I am not hungry or starving myself. I still have 25 pounds to go and I know it will take awhile and that's okay with me because it's so much easier to diet than before the surgery. Let me explain, When I eat a healthy meal like Baked chicken and Vegetables I am just as satisfied as if I ate a piece of Fried Chicken and Mashed Potatoes. It's all about choices. I can eat both kinds of meals but if I choose the healthier meal I will lose the weight I want to lose.

Something that my doc said after my surgery has always stuck with me - you will gravitate to foods you can eat more of. For example I can eat crackers or fruit and not feel real full. However if I eat a steak or dry chicken I can only have a few bites. So naturally I tend to eat fruit and crackers. Although we all know that steak and chicken are what we need to eat, it is human nature to eat things that we know we can have more of.

I'm only 5 days post op, how long did it take before the pain went away? I'm still on shakes.... But craving real food already. I can drink at least a litre of Water a day.. Before surgery I could drink 2 litres.... I'm also very short of breath when I walk... Is this normal?

I can easily eat that too, I had plication with banding- I avoid drinking while eating, even if I'm thirsty, I have to wait a while before I can drink. And definitely no fizzy drinks while eating or I'll puke. If I have that one mouthful too much I get huge upper back pain, which takes about half an hour to go. I avoid meats that are dryish, they don't pass through the band very well. I've lost 8 kilos in 6 weeks, but seem to have hit a plateau....and the scales aren't budging anymore for the last 2 week. I'm happy about not being able to have big portions, it's still a big learning process on what I can eat and what I can't and the quantity.

i have the lap band and plication and right about 1 cup or 1 1/2 cups of food, i am (full) and i stop......its important to stop at the dr recommended (amount).....sure i think i could eat more if i wanted/tried but am too scared of hurting myself to do that..just because we can doesnt mean we should.....so i stop at that sign of fullness.....i eat Protein first always......

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
