Hi, I am TC I am from Ohio.. I have decided to have the Gastric Plication surgery. I am currently at 240 pounds and 5'4 and 39 years old (40 in July). I have thought about WLS for the last 4 years. I am very scared. I do not have a support system...I will not tell any of my friends..the only person on the earth that knows is my mother. I am planning at the end of April I will have it. I have my last appointment this Friday and I should be cleared. I am a self pay so I have to wait a little longer (income tax refund) my goal is 150-160. Can anyone tell me if this realistic?

Hi TC44055 My daughter(19) had plication surgery Dec.31/12 and is down a total of 52.6 lbs! She still has about another 50 to go, but is doing very well...I am soooo proud of her. We were both very nervous(I think I was worse!) right up to the moment she went in....she was uncomfortable for about a week. Her biggest complaint throughout the whole thing, was how extremely tired she was the first month....she would wake up and just want to sleep... she was frustrated the first while, cause she was hungry, but things didnt agree with her..I think she tryed to eat to much, and to heavy of foods the first while...now all is good. Follow the doctors orders, do not try to eat more, or do more then they advise. I do not know of any chat groups...Good luck!

Hey TC

I had my plication on the 4th of feb 2013 ! I was 236 5'7" ive lost 30 lb and still going down :) well your goal depends on ur current weight , i will elaborate my doctor told me that you lose 80% of the diff between your current weight and your best healthy weight which is great!!

The surgery is easy nothing too complicated, i felt bad the first 2, 3 days after that it was kinda ok ! Every person is different but i can assure you you wont regret it!

Good luck to you and keep us posted !

Thank you TC....My daughter was 288 lbs. before surgery....She actually started about 1 month before surgery, because it was during the Christmas holidays, and she knew it would be hard... she had a protien shake in the morning, one at lunch, then a Lean Cuisine at supper, and sometimes a shake before bed.... By the time her surgery date arrived, she had lost 17 lbs. the 2 days of liquid diet, before the surgery, i what helped her reach her goal before surgery... it was hard for her, but she did it! The vision she had of herself, thin, helped her achieve the weight lost before surgery...Now, its easy for her, for the most....she does exercise as well, but not everyday yet. She is still able to "cheat" a little and still lose weight right now...However, I believe the closer she gets to her goal weight, the harder it will become, and her "cheats" will have to be minimal...right now, she can get away with it..Good luck to you again!

Hi TC. My name is Donna. I had the sleeve done on 2/18/13. I am still recovering a bit, but I also had a bit more complicated surgery. You see, I had the lap band initially on 3/21/11. I had irritation and swelling from the band making it difficult to eat, so I decided to switch to the sleeve. It has been an adjustment for me, but I have to tell you that most importantly you need to remember to follow the doctors orders, eat slowly, and make sure you get lots of fluids in. This site can offer a lot of support because the people here are doing the same thing you are. Good luck with your journey!

Of course I had to test it so I ate a bit more then i was allowed and boy did i feel a restriction!! It was a bad feeling but also Good too!! I am so surprised by how little fills me up and i am satisfied because I am eating things I enjoy but because its a small amount it works!! best of luck!! Sad n Blue.....had a major set back...My LAST so I thought appointment. ..Was Friday with Pysch. After about 400 questions and an additional hour talking with her everything seem to be going perfect. ... until I said I had 4 beers over the weekend with my girlfriends. .and it was dead silence. .. and then she told me she would NOT clear me for surgery! ! I was so upset...it took all I had inside not to break down and start crying. ..I feel so defeated...she wants me to go to some risk therapy group. I am pissed...this is all a set back for me. I had in my mind already planned to have the surgery at the end of April. Please Please encourage me .... I am feeling so sad...and angry because of 5 beers !

I hope she clears you. Four beers isint the end of the world for gods sake. I spose that was one of the perks I had with self pay in TJ, got to skip all that crap. Someone judging a life changing experience for you over a few beers is harsh...

I hope so too...it was an awful feeling. Now I have to sit in a room in a group setting..I am not to excited about that at all...I have not told anyone about this...and to go in a room of strangers ... and get schooled about alcohol...I know what I need to know I been researching this for a long time... I am just totally bummed...and I will have to miss more work..because ofcourse the group is in the middle of the day..ugh..

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
