Taking Steroids?

Recommended Posts

My doc (not surgeon) just prescribed a steroid dose pack for me b/c of my back but he mentioned possible weight gain! Well that's the last thing i want! Has anybody had to take something like this? I am debating if I should just wait out the pain and skip the meds or take a chance but I would freak if I gained weight! :(

I have been in prednisone for 6 years now.

It is doubtful that a med pack will cause that much weight gain. You are only taking it a few days. Whatever you gain you will lose again. It would be like Water weight. If your doc thinks you need it then take it. Don't suffer with back pain. It will only be temporary if you gain weight.

You might notice that you feel hungrier, but your stomach will not hold what it used to. Relax and take care of yourself!

Just the thought of gaining is horrible. I'm only 7wks out and still have a lot to lose. So I guess its safe to take it then? I didn't tell this doc about the surg. Wonder if i should call mg surgeons office?

Yes you need to call and tell them. Always tell doc about the surgery. It may change the way they treat you medically.

I would also put a call into your surgeons office just to let them know about it. Especially since you are only 7 weeks post op.

Called surgeon. Nurse said we can not take steroids! She said only of it's an emergency and that's the only way to treat the problem. But for a pinched nerve in my back, no. Said she just had a guy last week that was put on a steroid from his chiropractor and he ended up on the hospital with a huge ulcer. So, now that I've bought the Rx, guess I can't take it. :( So, heating pad and pain meds it is.

I've used those steroid packs in the past a few times. Made me hungry most of the time while using them.

Ask your nurse if you take something to prevent ulcers so that you can take the steroids.

I have been on them the entire post op and have never developed an ulcer.

Did you have to up your anti-ulcer meds? (Or whatever you take for your stomach) Nurse said you CAN take em, if its the only course if treatment but they really don't want you to b/c of the risks. I actually have my check up today so I'm going to ask the surgeon too. Maybe he can five me muscle relaxers or something.

She said that other man was over a year out before it happened. And she did say that, IF it was necessary to take it then I'd have to load up on the stomach meds to prevent ulcers. But, she just said she was 99.5% sure we are not suppose to take em. But, my check up is today so I'll ask the surgeon what he thinks . :)

Thank you. :)

You have to decide if the risks out weigh the benefit. If you are in a lot of pain steroids might be able to help you. You can also check into steroid injections. It goes into the area where there is pain and not your stomach.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
