Family acting different since surgery...

Recommended Posts

I was alway really close to my mother in law and sister in law. I think the world of them. I would do anything for them. Both of them are size 16. That's what I was before surgery . Since I had surgery they make mean comments or say I look sick. They even say I look like a stick when I am walking off. I can't say anything about my weight my husband was told it hurts people's feelings when I do. That it hurts them. I can remember when they both have been way smaller then me and I never changed or acted different to them. I can remember having to seat there and listen to every calorie she had ate that day. I didn't say a word. I didn't stop going around them. I didn't stop texting them. Now today my husband took me shopping and I can wear A SIZE 8!!!!!! I can't say anything because its not right... It's hard to feel good about yourself and be happy . If everyone around you thinking mean stuff because I am thin now. I didn't walk in saying stuff about my weight but people that has not seen me since I had it go on and on about it to me. I still love them like crazy and just want stuff back the way it was. I know I can't change them. I just can't talk to anyone else so I turned to here. I am still my goofy, acting stupid self. I don't dress like a hooker since I am thin. Still a jean and t-shirt girl. Just don't understand how someone that says they love you so much can turn on you that fast. I had surgery Dec16 2012 weighted 246 and now Sept 2 2013 I weight 148.

It's easy.

You were the fat one. No matter what they could count on you being bigger than them. They could lose or they could gain but they would never be the fat one as long as you held up your part.

Now that you have decided to be a healthier you, they see you as not holding up their expectation of you.

It's like when people treat you badly for going back to school. "Look at so-and-so thinking they are better than us", people will say.

Their problem is not a "you" problem. Some people really hate change. Don't stop being happy about your successes. Only two things can happen, they get over themselves or they don't. And if they don't then you will just find other folks to spend the energy you use to spend on them.

Please don't think I was calling YOU fat. I'm just using it as an example.

Speak up for yourself! WLS is no walk in the park. Did you go thru all the pre-surgery emotional stress and now the permanent change of lifestyle to have a bunch of envious family members silence you? I think not!

Remember: you made this lifelong change to improve your health and your mind. Don't let others walk over you because you were courageous to change for the best.

Pleasing people will get you nowhere. It just gives them the courage to be meaner and uglier.

Thanks ... I will get over it. I guess I just don't have the heart to treat people like that and it blows me away when I get treated like that. I am already moving on and trying to forget it. Thanks for taking time to post.

I happens frequently in close knit families/friend groups when there is a dramatic change in one of the people, but not the others triggers first off Jealousy. Second, a phenomena that I've dubbed 'the fat friend constant". Families and friends rely on the fat friend to always be there to, in a since, make themselves feel better. Although no one will ever admit that they do that, but everyone does.

There really isn't much you can do about the situation, except sit them down and tell them that their comments are hurting you. If you were having this problem with your friends, I would tell you to dump them, you don't need the negativity, but seeing as it's family, you can't really do that. But you can be brutally honest and tell them that you need their support, or if not their support at least their snide comments to stop.

Good luck! I hope things get better for you.

Harwood, congratulations on your weight loss, you look great! Jealousy is a tough thing to deal with, especially when family is involved. It's unfortunate that you don't have support from these family members but you can get lots of support from your RNY "family" here!

This sucks for you. I'm sorry it's happening. My main point is for your husband though. It's his family? Why isn't he handling this? Why is he not defending his wife and doing the talking to? If my mom was rude to my husband, I go straight to her. He made a choice when he married you. That choice included protecting you from the sizeist jealous witches. Seriously, you were willing to risk life and serious lifelong complications for surgery. They continue to make bad food choices and be rude to you. They're hateful and fine, whatever. You can't change that. But your husband could and SHOULD change that. How is it okay for them to talk about your weight....but you not talk about it? and how is it fair that they can comment about your appearance...yet you can't on theirs? I'd be a bitch and start asking if they wanted my fat clothes? *whilst holding up a size 12* and then say...oh yeah....I guess that won't work, huh? And stuff like that. It's rude what they're doing and it's vicious what your mister is allowing.

I'm sorry, it's just my opinion. I apologize if it's blunt. I just feel that situation is crap. Just stay away from them. Poison.

1st off..u look amazing! U were beautiful before and u are beautiful now just thinner! I have had to deal with friends probably more so than family so I'm not exactly there but I understand the losing dear people over something that u didn't even do wrong. It hurts! The hubby would really be great if he could step up and have a word with them. After all u guys were close and he should want to facilitate that continuing. People do treat u different when u lose..I'm seeing it myself now. I've lost 2 friends and have had a few that just seem not as close anymore and I'm not sure why. Nothing has happened. I do know that I'm seeking out people that are positive now. People that can build me up. Hope u are able to maintain a relationship with them..they are family after all but u deserve to be loved and treated as u always were.

I do agree w/ previous posts, your husband should stand up to his family for his sweetie! When you are present you should tell them how you feel. They are the ones losing out! If they don't change their ways then you just find cheerleaders for your life not downers.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
