1st day of pre-surgery liquid diet... will I make it?

Recommended Posts

Today is day 1 of my 14 day pre-surgery Protein shake diet. I feel excited about my upcoming surgery - about the changes in my life. I'm just scared about how hungry I feel now and wondering how I'll make it anothother 13 days, not to mention after surgery.

Anyone out there have to drink Protein shakes exclusively before surgery and any words of wisdom?:)

I am MISERABLE. Surgery is the 5th. I keep thinking to myself, if I could drink just Protein Drinks for a couple of weeks at a time, I wouldn't need a LAP BAND! But I know it's for the greater good, so I keep sluggin' them down :)

Hi all,

I too have to drink Optifast for 10days before surgery, then brooth only the day before. I am scared about how my body will digest the shake. I am a teacher, and don't have free access to the restroom, should nature call. I look forward to hearing your progress during your "shake time". Please keep posting, and as far as getting you through it...just think about the new you...and that in 6 months time, this will just be a distant memory! :)

Good Luck!

It helped me to think of it as following medical advice, not so much being on yet another diet. I thought about my liver getting in the way during surgery and that really did help.

It is so strange how every doctor is different!

I'm 5'6", medium frame, and my pre-surgery, pre-diet weight was 234.5. I was placed on two meals, and two Protein shakes a day for 2 wks before my surgery, and had no problems.

Good Luck with your surgery and hang in there...it's supposed to get easier after the first few days. :biggrin1:

I also did the 2 weeks of liquids..Optifast 5 times a day. It was very hard in the beginning. After the 3rd/4th day..I was ok with it. Then at a week..I started having second thoughts. It didn't help that I had to go to a bday party with Spaghetti and pizza. It didn't help that I had to cook for my family. And it really didn't help when my hubby ordered a pizza!! LOL I cried a few times...it was the hardest thing I've ever done besides the 2 week post op diet of broth. It's just that withdrawal from real food. I missed it. But I had a lot of heart to heart talks with my hubby because I kept wanting to just quit. He kept me going and talked me right back into sticking to that liquid diet. He even promised to not order anymore pizza until I was on real food. LOL!!! The best part is...time went by and now I'm off that phase of the diet. It's hard, but you can do it!!

I'm in Florida and surgery date is March 6. Started Optifast Feb 20. I too keep thinking about the liver being in the way if I don't follow Dr's orders. Am down 8 pounds since optifast. Am excited, nervous and looking forward to a new beginning!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
