I told her about the ulcer from what I found on the Internet and she thinks if she only smokes a little than she is fine. ughhhh

I told her to get a stop smoking aide

of she's doing this life changing life altering surgery than quitting should be a piece of cake

Smoking can cause ulcers and dvt. I was at the drs office the other day and the nurse was talking about a patient who smokes. Shes had an ulcer since shes had surgery and can barely eat or drink. It was so severe that she needed to be checked into the hospital. And now she has to take medication everyday because of it. This surgery is supposed to get you off your meds not add more. Also everyone I've known who has had surgery who has smoked has had a blood clot. Why would you want to do something so drastic to make yourself healthy but continue to do something that is so unhealthy for you. It makes no sense. I quit two years ago and it was the best decision I ever made including my decision to have surgery.

This is true. My doc did a nicotine test the day of my surgery.

I would tell her she is risking even getting the surgery and if she cant quit smoking than maybe she should wait until she can to get it? Other than that its hwr life and there isnt much you can do but tell her how you feel. Beyond that its on her

You tried, you did your best. She has the information, its up to her now. Try not to take it personally. She will need your support now more than ever.

Maybe start a pool going to get her an electric cigarette? Some people do well with it.. Maybe the doc will insist on nicotine patch and delay surgery...

You are a good friend.

I know my surgeon makes you quit 6 months prior to surgery and they do random tests before they let you have surgery.

yeah. every surgeon is different. my wife and I are having surgery aug 19 and we both quite and our surgeon said nicitrol inhalers were just fine, it's all the chemicals in cigarettes that he doesn't want. so either way nicotine is still in your system. I don't get it. but we're def set to go lol

My surgeon won't even touch you if you have nicotine in your system. They give you 2 chances and after that you are banned from their program. My doc wont be even allow nicotine supplementst. It has to be something she really wants. A smoker will not quit unless they are 110% ready to. Also, they are at a extremely high risk for an ulcer.

She might stop. My doc didn't require me to quit and I had no intentions to quit. But when I was discharged I had no desire to smoke and didn't even wanna see a cigarette.

having said all this please know that quitting smoking is one of the most difficult things that you can do. I also hear about people on the site who are still drinking alcohol another no no. all you can do is try to be supportive and know that it's a very hard habit to quit.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
