why does everyone think every illness is related to RNY?

Recommended Posts

I have a sinus infection a bad one. But my husband says since u had the rny you get sick more. OMG...its a sinus infection. And yes the medication hurt my stomach so they gave me another medication. People at work think the same thing. If I get a headache. Its because I had surgery. So tired of defending my decision. I really think they are jealous, yes even my husband. Really people! I'm 9 months out and I feel fine. My blood work is great even my Iron, which was never so before surgery. Thanks for letting me vent.

Why do people think all our health problems are because we are fat? We just switch one excuse for another.

Yes even doctors do this. I had a bad cough and would cough up junk. My allergist tried to blame it on reflux which I have never had. She kept bringing it up and explaining the symptoms like suddenly I'd admit to having it!

She finally listened to me and we figured out the real problem. I haven't seen her since. Made me so angry.

My family dr did me the same way about a sinus infection! She said "Oh, its just the "slimes" you get after RNY...not sinus drainage"... I was like all kinds of crazy on her! I had a true sinus drainage...and it was infected!! She finally agreed once I went off on her about the whole RNY surgery and how I have had prior sinus infections and that I know my body.... round of Zpack and I was all set!

Even my crazy sister, who had RNY 2 1/2 years ago says things sometimes if I say I have a headache...she'll so "Oh, you're dehydrated because of the RNY"... No, I have a headache...plain and simple... tylenol and rest and I am good. I drink PLENTY of fluids and know when I am dehydrated!

I honestly don't think we can win for losing. We are trying to make ourselves healthy by taking our weight off which creates the high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, heart problems and the list goes on. Now if we have/would develop this, behind our backs the thoughts, snide remarks "she/he wouldn't have these problems if they would take weight off". Off comes the weight, we develop a cough, sinsus infections (which by the way blood pressure medications can cause sinusitis), flu and it is because we lost too much weight, we're too skinny, or the surgery itself is too blame

. I don't care if they are professionals or friends, until they walk in our shoes they will never get it. My favorite saying is "you can't argue with stupid".

I actually think this may be true, or at least partially. I am not a doctor, bur after RNY you are malabsorbing not only the calories, but Vitamins and minerals as well. After that comes lower immunity and you catch majority of the bugs.,.

I'm in a the hospital with a TIA ( mini stroke). Which, by way, I got at the beginning of the paul McCartney concert:(

SUCKS! And you guessed it, the doc at this unfamiliar hospital blamed it on rny... Totally ignorant. He wants to start me on aspirin....not only did I just have rny, I'm allergic to aspirin! We discussed this for a good 45 min. Before I told him to get out. And hospital food isn't wls friendly unless you order it pureed....passs!

I would have been better off traveling to my regular hospital....ambulance didn't go that far, though . Anyway, missed the show, and had to fight with the doctor about how gastric bypass is the root of all evils.

I hate to hear that! I hope you feel better soon.

When I was in the hospital last week the food was mostly fine since they do a lot of wls there though they did being me toast with my Breakfast one morning. I was a little confused by that.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
