First Fill comments.

Received my first fill this afternoon and I have some concerns…

According to Dr. C.’s paperwork, I was to receive 4 ccs. 4cc’s!!! What the heck, doesn’t that seem like quite a bit for a first fill? Also, the TO clinic advised that they did not fill my band with any saline at the time of surgery and Dr. D was able to withdraw a total of 5 cc at the time of the fill. What’s up with the mystery 1 cc? Dr. D added the 4 cc’s as per the paperwork and then asked that I drink some Water before I leave. One sip, two sip and nope…those two sips refused to stay down and I barfed in the most un-ladylike way in the sink. He then said he’d have to de-fill my band by 1 cc-thank god he has good aim and was able to find the port easily or else I may have barfed on him in retaliation.

I have a funny feeling that there has been some miscommunication and the amount given is incorrect.

So here’s how I justified not questioning the amount.

Oh well, if I have more Fluid in the band = faster weight loss. A “money for nothin’ and your chick for free” approach.:Banane43:

Or could this deluded thinking backfire by causing me to lose weight initially and then when it’s time for more Fluid to be added…duh…the band will be at its max capacity.

Also, any suggestions on approved chit chat topics while a strange man sticks you with a tiny needle? Hey, I said “A tiny needle” not “HIS tiny needle” Sicko’s!!:heh:

I always use my fall back lines like “Yes, those stretch marks do resemble the outline of the state of Florida” or the old stand-by “Yep, when those rolls squish together it does remind me of the dual images of Mad magazine’s “fold-in” feature. A first glance just your average blobs of fat…squish it together and it’s the depiction of the Queen Mother riding an armadillo while eating a grilled cheese!” Ah…good times.

What do you think peeps??

well, my dear.... I would have thought with an amount you were getting would mean that you had the larger band. Maybe you smart mouthed lightweights have thick stomachs? But since people which those sized bands typically get 4 or 5cc first fills with no problems, I don't know. Did you not just call Dr. C's office?! Call them and tell them that:

1) 'supposedly' you had a mystery 1cc in your band

2) what size of band do you have (and/or why were you told to get 4cc!)

I hope it didn't just say that you had a 4cc band, and he thought that was how much fill you were getting. Geeeeeeez.

Call them, I'm serious. I want to know, at least.

I have nothing to say about the fill, I havent had one yet, not for another few weeks. But....

You are hysterical, I am cracking up reading your post, especially about barfing on the MD in retaliation.

Thanks for the laugh!:scared:

Mookie you are hillarious!!! Ive wondered what to say to someone fiddling around with a mysterious port during an intricate proceedure. I learned during my second delivery that some surgeons have no sense of humor... still, its your port! you rock it!

hehehe.

I wouldnt worry about meeting capacity. I could be nieve but i think you will have constriction just fine all the way down the road.

I dont think that they use the swedish band in Canada, but I could be wrong. I know from talking to my Dr., who is different from yours that I recieved the "large" Inamed AP band last week.

Dr. C told me that it will hold up to 14CC, and the fill regiment is different than the smaller bands. More CC's per fill.

Maybe you have a larger band? They have been in use in Canada since November.

Well I got my first fill 6weeks out (2cc) . For me that fill went well but before I left the doc. off. I could feel a big differ. You should be getting about 1/2cc at every vist. You have to do this slow. And yes, If you get too much at one time it WILL back fire!! food will start getting stuck in your chest, you will have PB's . So your fills need to be slow.

Dr. C uses only Inamed/Allergan bands, but the TLBC uses different ones AND the Inamed bands. The larger bands have been around forever, it's the "AP" type ones that are new (in small and large).

Hi Andrew

Yep they sure use it in Canada. I got banded by Dr Joffe at the TLBC Aug/06

I stand corrected.

Thanks,

Andrew

Mookie,

It all depends on what type of band you have. If you are a Dr Coburn patient you will have one of the Innamed bands. There are 5 that are being used as far as I know. They use to larger fill bands the Vanguard and the new AP (both hold around 9-10 cc's I think) or the smaller rigid bands that hold 4 cc's. There are three types of those and the only difference in the band is the diameter that goes around the stomach.

Just so you know some saline will disappear but it has never magically appeared as far as I know. But I know with Dr Yau there have been times when he has with drawn all my fill and it is up by a CC based on the amount of air in the band etc. So my true fill is usually 1 to 1.5 cc less that the withdrawn amount. There is a little bit of fill that sits in the tubing that doesn't restrict your stomach either so it is kinda of a neutral amount.

Don't worry about your max capacity the band at max should be completely closed off. It may take you more fill to lose than someone else, but don't sweat it, it may take you less to feel that elusive restriction and sweet spot. It is because we are all so different. Focus on how the liquid feels going down when you are in the clinic, focus on the food you can eat and how it feels and focus on your weight loss and you will do fantastic.

Try not to focus on them playing with your port it can be freaky but you get a little used to it.. sooner rather than later.

Keep up the weight loss

I have the French MidBand and I was due for my first fill March 20, but I had to rebook for April 24th. I am told that the first fill is around 5 ccs by the fill nurse. As I have fears of coming back to N.Van and puking up any food I eat, is it possible to ask for a smaller fill or does one have to go by the instructions of the fill nurse? I won't have easy access to the clinic. Doddie

You'd probably be just fine with what they give you, and they'll make you hang around to be sure everythings good. If you're weird like me, and are suddenly tight after a few days, it's not like you're out in the boonies (me) and can't get help! BUT... you'll be fine! Tell 'em your worried, and maybe they will be a little more conservative with you :)

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
