I have had GERD for at least 20 years. It has been bad and I have even been to the ER several times. I have been on different prescriptions for it as well. It is not caused by any specific food and even drinking Water causes it. Yes, acidic things will aggravate it, but just about everything has contributed to it.

I am about 7 weeks post op. My GERD was gone the day of my surgery. I thought it was too good to be true. I stopped my meds the 2nd day. For the first time in 20 years I can drink things like OJ!

GERD IS GONE!!

Anyone else have this happen??? Does anyone know why it happened (the biology of curing it through RNY)?

YEAH..... I think it happens from the surgeon re-wiring everything and it makes lots of ailments go away :)

I am the same way. I've dealt with GERD for over 10 years and it's gotten progressively worse. Two years ago I also ended up having ulcers in my stomach and esophagus and the stomach acid was slowly eroding my esophagus. I would wake up at night aspirating my stomach acid and would choke until it was clear. Since the moment I woke up from surgery I haven't had any type of acid reflux or heartburn. I am now 15 days post-op and feel that the surgery was a success just based on that. During the surgery my doc also fixed my hiatal hernia which was contributing to my problems.

So happy.

Mine was the same way - I'd choke and throw up and have to go to the ER

Even though my weight loss is soooo slow (-19 in 7 weeks), just getting rid of the GERD is amazing! I am drinking ORANGE JUICE!!! WOOT WOOT :P :P :P

Yay!!!! So glad I found this! I can't drink oj & I get terrible reflux. My op is pencilled in for the 20th Aug. X

I know that this is not a cure for all; so many have written how bad their GERD got after RNY. But for me it was a CURE! I hope it will be for you too! I cannot believe I am GERD-free after 20 years of agony.

Really? I haven't heard of any with gerd after gastric bypass. I've seen a ton of sleeve patients that it made it horrible...but not bypass. I'm so glad it helped mine and didn't make it worse.

It was one of the first things I noticed when I woke up from surgery. I have had constant acid and heart burn for a few years, so when it was gone, I noticed. It's a great feeling.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
