is it different for lesbians?

Recommended Posts

guess i should be clear up front that i don't mean the actual surgery because, as far as i know, my insides aren't any different than any other woman.

i mean with acceptance - before and after. i went to have my psychological assessment and we got to talking about the disproportionate occurrence of obesity in the lesbian community (my psych's gay). i surmised that there's not as much pressure in the lesbian community to look a certain way in order for someone to find you attractive (no science behind it; just my thought). then i got to thinking about my decision to move forward with RnY and wondered if i'll be judged differently by different communities? so my friends who have successfully lost, and maintained, weight would be more likely to think i'm taking the easy way out. and my lesbian friends might wonder why i'm doing this because i look great and am beautiful just the way i am? i know - A LOT of thinking!

but then i decided that this is a medical and health decision. my doctor drew the comparison to a person who develops high blood pressure. they might try to get the numbers down with diet and exercise, but then move to the medical intervention if that doesn't work. that struck a cord with me. i've tried it all and now i'm adding the medical tool.

thanks for allowing me to process!

I'm not a lesbian but have the same thoughts about being African American. Curves are appreciated. I worry I will get slot of negative feedback if I end up stick thin.

My Dr Oz said look at it as thou you had cancer and to get rid of the cancer you ave to have surgery. If you will have surgery to get rid of the cancer then why not gastric bypass to get rid of obesity? Because obesity can cause cancer and heart disease and diabetes so do it for your health

i would not see why you would get grief from the lesbian community i would like to think they would be non judgmental mostly because they don't want to be judged for choices they make in there life this is just my thoughts.

I think no matter what community we are in there will be people that judge and people that support. All I can say is this is a journey you have to do for yourself and no one. And if you will be a better person (health wise) and feel better then by all means go for it. I wish you the best of luck.

Well...as someone who's lived in both worlds, I can say there is definite truth to your thoughts. Women don't judge as much on appearance in the lesbian world. It's as simple as that. Women judge competition (other women potentially out for their prey) totally differently than they judge a potential mate.

I don't think it makes any difference to me. I have friends who are overweight and skinny and in between in the lesbian community. I think on the whole as I live in a small town, the gay community can be quite narrow minded and judgemental. I think women are more judgemental than men in general regardless of sexual Orientation. My girlfriend is athletic and slim, I am bigger and love my sofa! I couldn't care less what my lesbian community thinks of me any more than the hetero community before or after my surgery. I am me ..

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
