What made you choose the bypass over the sleeve?

My doctor asked me today why I wanted bypass-and of course my boyfriend shot up said something dumb lol. I said because I know other people who have had great results.

I had bypass because I had bad acid reflux before surgery and the sleeve can sometimes make it worse. My GERD is gone now!!!

I choose bypass because I didn't want my stomach completely removed. In some worse cases like throat cancer your old stomach can be reattached even though it is rarely done I like to know it is still possible.

I was actually originally a sleeve patient and before surgery my insurance told me they wouldn't cover the sleeve so my only option was bypass. I was originally upset but now SO THANKFUL I got the bypass. Way better results and I NEED the restriction and dumping to keep me on track. I had heartburn prior to surgery and my surgeon warned that the sleeve may make it worse and if that were the case he'd have to revise me to bypass anyways. So glad I'm an RNY patient now

Until noon today I thought I was going to be a sleeve patient. But then my surgeon in my pre op appt told me he thought the bypass was a better option. I have a hiatal hernia and reflux. So here I am. Surgery is scheduled for 2/28.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
