I have changed my surgery from VSG to RNY. I am wondering how long everyone was off work? Or, when you felt like you could have returned. And what do you do??

I am going in on Valentines Day and I have a desk job. I have taken 2 weeks.

Is it Laproscopic or open? My Dr told me 2 weeks off work. 2 weeks light duty for laproscopic. She told me 4 weeks off, then 2 weeks light duty for open.

Thanks! That's kind of what I expected. I will be laproscopic.

Let me say two weeks for a desk job is ok but if you can take more time, take it. It's not how you feel it's getting the food and Water In. It can be a challenge. Good luck!

Me too! When is your surgery date?

February 14th! I have changed procedures, (because of insurance), rescheduled 2 times and finally it's here. I'm having a bunch of different emotions! I guess it will be crazy after with the hormone rollercoaster....lol

I took 6 weeks off because I could under FMLA & I'm so glad I did. I got so tired after the 3rd week & it was better to come to work when I wasn't as overwhelmed by food management. My doc likes for his patients to be out 4 weeks if they can (lap procedure) but will write for less if the pt needs to get back sooner. He had no problem with 6 weeks - seemed really happy I could be out that long.

I was off two (today was my first day back). I felt physically able to return a couple days ago, but after today I have identified the challenge of focusing on work and food/liquid requirements- it is a challenge!

I returned to work after 2 weeks and was fine. I found it harder to get all my Water and Protein in when I first went back to work, but now I'm golden. Good luck.

I was feeling ok after 2 weks but took 1 month ....i was able to concentrate on my proper post op diet ..taking my time preparing my meals and taking my time to eat....which is so important the first month.

I went back to work today, just one week after surgery. I have a desk job but getting up and down often made me a little sore by the end. Hardest part was seeing what everyone was eating and what bog portions they ate. Being distracted I drank a full 8oz of a Protein shake plus applesauce and way overdid it. Feeling passes in 40 minutes but still a good learning of what to pay attention to.

Overall glad I went in and started normal life again- then again it's my personal preference to always be working and on the go so do what feels right for you.

Yuck... how hard has that been. I just cant even imagine. I took 6 weeks off because I had the time and was FMLA protected. Glad I did... helped me heal and get all my requirements in.

I had surgery on Friday, home Saturday, back to work half days Wednesday. Full days Monday. I had taken 2 weeks off but didn't use it. I am one that can not just sit at home. I also have a desk job somewhat.. I was a little sore but I was much worse if I sat around or laid around at home. I had to be standing or walking around or every muscle in me tightened up and made me much worse. Everyone is different! Listen to your body and don't over do it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
