There are a few thing I'm wondering about, and I never seem to remember when I'm at the doc's.

1. Stairs - any issues after surgery?

2. Showering - how long after surgery can you shower?

3. Post op care - did you find it necessary to have someone there with you in the week or two after surgery? Or were you pretty much ok on your own?

Oh, also what have you found to be the best sleeping position right after surgery?

Everyone is a little different! But I will answer your questions based on my experience. ;)

1) I was not told anything about stairs. I did just fine with stairs. I couldn't lift anything for a few weeks but that was pretty much my only restriction.

2) I could shower the day after surgery. I couldn't "soak". I was just asked to let the Water run off and towel dry. No baths until my sticky tape stuff was gone and I met with surgeon 2 weeks post op for the clearance.

3) I was perfectly fine on my own. My husband was here the day I came home from surgery, but I didn't need him. I had surgery on a Friday and home Saturday. I was back to work on Wednesday. I did not sit or lay around. I was sooo sore if I did. I was always moving because it didn't let the soreness set in. sleeping was the worst. It was hard to get comfy! I had propped myself up with pillows so I wasn't laying flat. And I would wake up every 3 hours to walk around. I had to "roll" out of bed. To lay down for too long made me very stiff and sore for about a week.

Like i said.. everyone is different!! I prepared myself for the worst. Just because I had no idea what to expect. I was very fortunate that it went so smooth. Any more questions let us know!

Hi!!! I will try to help you with your questions. Just remember everyone and every hospital/doctor is different on what they say.

1. Stairs were not an issue for me at all. If you already have issues with stairs then you probably still will but if not you should be ok.

2. I was able to shower the day after surgery. I was told no soaking in Water till I get the ok from the doctor.

3. I just needed my husband to drive me home from the hospital and that's all the help I needed from him. Well except bringing the laundry baskets downstairs but everything else I have done myself. I keep myself busy moving and then I rest for a little bit.

4. I sleep on my stomach/side so sleeping was interesting for me. I slept in a recliner till my staples were out. After that I have slept in my bed without many issues.

Good luck with your surgery and this new adventure. Just remember to listen to what your body is saying and drink drink drink your fluids (trust me you want to keep on that).

Pretty much the same for me. Did stairs when I came home and same for the shower. I slept in a recliner for a while. Laying down was not good. I was pretty good alone but I did have complications so he had to take me back to the ER. Good luck.

Thanks! I know everyone's different but it at least gives me an idea of what to expect.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
