Diet Before Surgery

Recommended Posts

Hello. I am just starting my 3 month pre-op education before I can have surgery. I wanted to know what type of diet and what foods the nutritionist are telling people. I find out this week when my first appointment is. Any info would be great! Thanks!!!

I have to do 6 mo - Iโ€™ve completed 4 mo.

basically - nutritionally sound - calories based on your weight - and learning to measure and report.

I have to sit with this skinny bit** once a mo and go over what iโ€™m eating blah blah blah - itโ€™s doing my time - but I find it to be BRUTAL. She pontificates eating more carbs - when I KNOW itโ€™s carbs (good OR bad) that help raise my blood sugars - so now I lie to make her happy

and i weigh in for her...i find it very dull.

I had to do a psych eval. I was very honest... Which I later regretted. Before he would clear me I had to go 3 more visits, over an hour away, and expensive. I did not get anything out of them. I basically nodded and said what I knew he would want to here. I finally put my foot down. He wanted 2 more sessions and I refused, stating I was beginning to resent this treatment and the time it took me to come and go. Not to mention the month it delayed me. I really liked the nutritionist that I saw. She was very helpful and kind. Other than those 2, I had all sorts of appointments to get EKG, barium swallow, ultrasound, lots of lab work, anesthesia consult, urine screening, ABGs, decision visit. Oh and there was an initial education class before you get started with any of the other stuff. I had my decision visit Friday, Nov 3 where I confirmed with surgeon that I wanted RNY. Now I am waiting for insurance clearance. Hoping to get a surgery date before I leave for Thanksgiving, and the actual surgery near Christmas. It's been a crazy process and I am psyched to be near the end!!! Good luck with everything.

Oops.. I went on a tangent and didn't answer your question. My surgeon recommends 15 pounds of weight loss before surgery and a 2 week liquid diet. He will not delay surgery if you do not make 15 pounds. I'm having a hard time with that as I am eating all the things I will never be able to eat again. I'm also not dieting for the first time in a long time. I have increased exercise... So I'm basically breaking even.

I think thereโ€™s a BIG difference between a โ€œgeneralโ€ nut and a โ€œbariatricโ€ nut

My general nut is NOT a fan of my high Protein ways - My diet is Protein and veggies - she wants me to add carbs (even refined) and fruits - which my diabetic body does NOT care for (well I do - but my blood sugars DO NOT)

I had a side conversation with the Bariatric Nut - and she explained that the general nuts just donโ€™t get the bariatric diet -

My nut went so far as to say โ€œI could never do that surgery - I like eating too muchโ€ -

sheโ€™s a size 6 (maybe 8) and I wanted to scream -

Iโ€™m doing this to mitigate my diabetes - and have a much more active lifestyle.

You might be pleasantly surprised and like your nut -- I like the person - sheโ€™s a doll - and I would kill for her clothing - but the fact that sheโ€™s not enthralled with my choice to get bariatric surgery sorta sucks -- I feel like Iโ€™m playing her game and doing what she wants - but I wish I could just be honest and say Iโ€™m loosing weight because I gotta see you every month - otherwise Iโ€™d be having a heck of a food funeral were it not for these mandatory woo woo veggies and fruit meetings.

whew - i feel better saying that.

We went to one of those brazilian steakhouses in september and I maybe ate a 1/4 of what I could - Iโ€™m so ready - mentally - physically - everything - and for that I will give the nut props - despite her not being in favor of surgery.

I know that I will still be the same girl when this is over - regardless of what size jeans I wear - my problems arenโ€™t going to vanish - and Iโ€™m excited more than anything about being able to move.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.ย  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.ย  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? Itโ€™s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so Iโ€™m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight.ย It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey โค๏ธย Together, we got this!
