How Did You Decide?

Recommended Posts

I am almost certain that I want to follow the RNY option, but reading about the nutritional deficiencies does scare me a little. How much research did you do before deciding on RNY, and why did you choose it as opposed to the other options. Has anyone had a bad experience with the RNY?

I chose the RNY because you get the best bang for your buck. You lose the most weight with RNY and if you follow what your doctor has planned... meals, fluids, Protein, vitimas you will not have a problem. I am almost 6 months post op, I get a full blood panel every 3 months and I have no issues what so ever. My surgery was easy, recovery was fast, I was back to work in 1 week and I am back to my jogging as well. I follow what my doctor instructs me to do and I have no problems or issues.

From what I understand you loose the most weight with RNY, 2 nd is the sleeve and the least amount with the band.

I chose RNY because its a faster weight lose and more weight lose than the band. Also, I didn't want the risk of the band slipping or having to wait to get it filled after surgery and the possibility of it being under filled or over filled. My first week or so I had a hard time getting enough Protein in. But I am 18 days post-op I have lost 21 lbs I feel good and in am able to get the Protein down, it take all day but I do it... Good luck to you

I chose rny because because of GERD. Rny is the best option to get rid of reflux.

Who told you about these deficiencies? Am 5 weeks after my surgery, and I follow my surgeon and dietician's food suggestions, and am so healthy and energetic. Am a university faculty, doctoral student, a mom of two teens, and a wife.

Go for it :-)

I originally opted for the sleeve but after discussing with my surgeon and nutritionist decided on rny. Specifically because I am a grazer and didnt want the sleeve to be empty and me be able to graze on whatever I wanted. I needed to be accountable for what I ate and the rny seemed to be the perfect tool for me. The band wasnt even an option for me. The fills seemed like a pain in the butt and quite frankly I hadnt heard very good things about them.

My dad had the sleeve and in 5 months in he began to gain weight. Got right back into bad eating habits. He lost 50/60 pounds in 4 months gained 15/20lbs in the 5th month. So to me and knowing myself I knew I'd have the same problem.. I needed something that would HELP me keep my self accountable. I know a couple years down the road the restrictions my pouch give me now will be more lenient BUT I believe the habits I am creating now will help me throughout my life.

Don't get me wrong I have seen the sleeve work for a lot of people. I just also read and seen the weight loss is not be as sustainable as a RNY procedure.

I have the same thoughts and concerns I'm trying to decide between the sleeve or bypass. I want the best long term results I also want to feel like I live a normal life, I don't want to feel like I go out to eat or something with friends or date and I just sitting at the table everybody eats because I can only eat two bite, I think that would be depressing... but I wonder about still being able to binge through a sleeve and eating through the pain ppl talk about... I think having a negative consequences of dumping me help me with that some and not be able to consume any carbs and sugars is probably better also but it seems really drastic and scary all the different concerns and nutritional stuff... I do want to be healthy and I want to be able to get pregnant, which I cannot do at 5'7 & 270

If you are looking for the best long term results the Gastric Bypass is the way to go. I had my surgery in Brugge in Belgium with Dr. Bruno Dillemans through International Surgery Group. I had a great experience and would strongly recommend them. Cheap too!! Dr Dillemans told me that I can expect to see a loss of between 80 to 100% of my excess weight in about a 12 month period. Oh and the RNY Bypass is reversable the Sleeve isn't. Bear that in mind also. Hope this helps.

Like a few of you, I am a grazer and I love sweets. I actually want dumping or the fear of it anyway. Plus, I want to be scared to death of stretching my pouch out. The more I read, the more important I realize it is that you have to be dedicated to the Vitamins and the Protein lifelong which is good for your system as well as keeping the weight off.

I also realize that I have not had good eating habits in the past so I am sure I have had deficiencies at some point. At least this way I'll be getting blood work and medical/Dr. care

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
