Where does "can't eat this after surgery" info come from?

Recommended Posts

I'm checking the new posts tonight and I see , "is it true I won't be able to eat pizza after band". Is is true no more gum?

Did I miss some reading when I did my research? Is there doctors that give this advice? Is this advice coming from naysayers against WLS?

wsup?

You have done great on your weight loss....you need to tell us what to eat and not eat!! I say if you have lost 90 lbs, from not chewing gum and eating pizza, then you shouldn't!

I excited for you!!

I think some people have trouble with some foods and assume all do. It is not a one size fits all kinda thing. It is a very individual thing, as I am learning. My friend has been banded over 1 year and has trouble with meat and eggs. I was able to eat them as soon as my solid stage began.

You have done so great! Can you share how you achieved such great success?

A lot of it comes from confusion (or perhaps lack of separation is a better way to put it) between RNY and AGB. With RNY, most of the time, there are things you just can't eat. With AGB, you can eat whatever will pass. I can't even say "a lot" but several AGB surgeons began as RNY surgeons, and when they grew their practice to include AGB did not completely revamp the guidelines, nutritional info, etc. the way they probably should have, so a lot of AGB patients actually have RNY care sheets.

The gum is a suggestion, for the most part. Actually everything is a suggestion, for the most part, though some surgeons will certainly exclude some things. Gum has an inherent danger in that it's not something that a churning esophagus is going to be able to manipulate enough to clear the band. So if it's stuck, it's probably going to stay that way, unless you can get it up. Swallowing gum probably isn't a common thing, but it's one of the things (like large pills) where if it goes down, and your restriction is good, you're probably going to KNOW it. :)

I was recently told by another bandster not to drink using a straw....Too much air into the stoma. Makes sense to me.....

I agree about the straw thing Jack... it never made sense to me. I use straws all the time and have never had any trouble with air!

I agree, it's different for everyone. I have a hard time with chicken, but I can swallow my ginormous omega-3 supplements with no problem. Lists of foods that bandsters can and cannot eat are just some of the ones that are most common across bandsters are are likely to give you some trouble. You will discover on your own what does and doesn't work for you as you go through the liquids --> mushies --> solids process.

I daresay every bandster here has tried foods on the "don't eat this or you'll be sorry" list. If you loved pizza before the band, sooner or later you'll be tempted to try it again and see what happens. The good news is, when you're experimenting, it only takes a second to figure out which foods go on your personal HELL NO list. For better or for worse, Mother Nature has given us an amazingly responsive spit-up mechanism.

my nutrionist gave me a list of what not to eat. Mainly fibrous foods like asparagus and celery because they ball up in the stomach and can't get through the band - same with white bread. the heading says foods that may cause discomfort. Enough of a warning for me. Same with the straw - I don't need to use a straw and would rather not try. So its not an issue nor is gum - Brittney Spears turned me off on gum, she looked so stupid chomping away during an interview I thought geesh I hope I don't ever look that stupid.

I think most have said it, but its a personal thing most of the time. There are certain foods that may or probably would be hard to get down, but its not that way for everyone. It also depends on what your diet cososts of post banding as well. Whether you depend on the restiction to control portions or accompany that with a particular "diet". There are certain foods I "can't" have anymore because i choose to, not because I can't with the band.

Where does "can't eat this after surgery" info come from?

This info in my opinion comes for each individual. You learn what you can and can not eat depending on your fill level. Everyone is different and Every doctor gives different post op instructions. My doctor told me no more carbonation, other doctors say it is OK. It is a learning thing. and listen to your own doctor, you chose him and paid for him so listen to him. Thats how I see it!

I am very very tight, and I enjoyed shrimp at Red Lobster last night and have a bunch left over for lunch today. I cut it into tiny pieces and chewed the heck out of it. I only ate maybe 4 and everyone else was finished with their dinner (about 20 people). Most people who have good restriction cannot eat shrimp, so I guess it really is an individual thing.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
