Warning! Malitol/sorbitol

Recommended Posts

as we are all tempted by sweets and whatnot but know better and scour the aisles for sugar free items PLEASE be aware of the dangers of malitol/sorbitol, sugar alcohols...which incidentally are neither sugar nor alcohol, but in fact a type of carb that is (in my opinion) EVIIIIIL they pretty much just rot in your gut causing at least a "laxative effect" and more extreme can cause bloating, cramping, diarrhea and horrible ookey pain.

-this all stems from a lactose/sugar free ice cream i found containing, you guessed it, malitol which after two tablespoons cause me the most excruciating four hours of my life.

so beware folks, it might be confused as dumping but anything containing more that (...40g i think) of malitol/sorbitol WILL cause baaaaad things...

talk to your doctors/dietions ect!!

I have to say that before RNY those nasty sugarfree ingrdients were killers in my gut--gas and diarhea but now just gas and pain. I find myself mostly constipated all the time. Have tried everything including varities of laxatives which work but you can't use them everyday, chop salads, apple slices, Fiber supplements of every variety. Nothing works until I use laxative or enema. Anyone dealing with this?

Yes I've tried those also but they are kind of hit or miss and again my NUT says you can get dependent on them.

Erythritol, found in stevia is also a sugar alcohol however studies/google have indicated that this is the best one to consume because the side effects are much less. Granted they downturn that folks with digestive problems should avoid this type of sugar alcohol it tends to depend on the individual. I have a Vitamin Water daily and it makes me feel great and love the flavors, more particular Yumberry! It's a Chinese strawberry. It really is yummy:)

I've been using stevia for a while now, and it is great!! The sorbitol sends me flying to the washroom within a half an hour. So much for the sugar free cookies!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
