Decisions To Make

Recommended Posts

So im 24, 5'6" and 260 lbs. I have had my consultation for weight loss surgery and am starting my journey. The 2 options are gastic bypass and lap band. Im leaning towards gastric bypass. I have an appointment the 1st week in sept for my physical and consultation with the surgeon. My goal is to be my high school weight of 160 again. Anyone have any opinions on which procedure they would recommend? Both would cost the same fod me so its not a factor. Please help! All experiences and stories good and bad welcome. Just looking for some honesty.

I am 27 and 270 pounds and had the lap band 2 years ago, without much weight loss success. I intentionally lost 30 pounds from my preop diet and a little bit after surgery but have never really felt any restriction from the band other then bread gets stuck. I will be having the RNY next month and wish I would of went with that all along. If i would of been honest with my self I should of knowen the band would not work for me because I have never eaten large volumes of food. Which the band is good for because it makes you eat less, but if you eat bad in small amounts many times a day the band in my opionion is not the way to go. With the bypass its restriction and malabsorption so you lose weight faster. But your body only does the malabsorption for around 18 months then your body gets used to it. I hope this has helped you out some, but when it comes down to it its your choice.

I had a band for 2 1/2 years, removed 2 weeks ago, bypass sometime next year. I had some luck with the band (from 295 to 225) however had a lot of problems with it as well. Threw up all the time, even just brushing my teeth, chest pain, constant pressure in my throat/neck. Eventually my band slipped and caused stomach herniation and I had to have urgent removal....I don't hate the and, but wish I'd done bypass to start!

Thank you so much for all your inputs. I have my physical and drs consultation next week. My husband is nervous for me, but im not sure he really understand since he is very athletic and fit. I used to run around in highschool playing volleyball and basketball and now i cant. I have a 6 month old and am afraid i wont be able to play with her like i want to. I am encouraged by you all's comments that this might be a huge turning point for me.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
