Yes I had my RNY gastric bypass open an My scar is only about3 inches long but I was also told that mine was one of the smallest incesions my Dr. Had made idk why but that's what the nurses told me . My Dr. Also only does open RNY surgery , I won't lie it hurt to do anything take showers getting up going to the bathroom etc. You really need someone to help you with the first 2 weeks luckily I had my husband . You will do fine though the pain when I got out of surgery was a burning sensation from very deep inside my stomach area an even the morphine drip every 20 min was just taking the edge off but you will get through it walking really helps you heal faster an you will start to notice it by week 2 of recovery Goodluck and Godbless

Mine was open. My Dr also does only open less complications. I am 4 wks out and can't believe how easy it was. Very little pain, more just uncomfortable.

hi Alisa, your scar doesn't seem very big from your pic. Are you healing well? I was hoping for the laproscopic surgery, but due to a car accident when I was 5, with a ruptured bowel, I have scar tissue & a long scar on my belly about 3 inches above my belly button that goes down to about to my pelvic bone. I was told by the nurse that the Surgeon will start laproscopic, and see what it looks like inside, but most likely become a full open surgery.

Did you have any problems with bleeding during surgery?

Thx

Dawn

CathyB,

How was your recovery after the Open surgery? My date for surgery is Oct 29, and I'm anticipating the Surgeon will choose the open instead of laproscopic.. wondering how you did after.

Do you work outside the home? If so, how long were you off?

Thank you in advance,

Dawn

I had many complication Im doing better now but it was very rough for me. Im still on a 24 hour feeding tube and i haven't been back to work since the surgery Aug 3rd. However i think i was just unlucky because many people on here don't have much in the way of problems after surgery. Don't wanna scare you i do feel better now that Im through the toughest parts just went through he'll to get here

Dawn I took 8 weeks off but felt good enough to return after 4. I'm a Occupational Therapist and work in nursing home. No complications, still doing great, down 80lbs.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
