Why Did You Choose Gastric Bypass Vs Gastric Sleeve?

Recommended Posts

I chose bypass mot only because my insurance didnt conver the sleeve but because in addition to the smaller stomach your small intestine is partially bypassed which causes malabsorbtion which means you only partially absorb the calories that you do eat. Being MORBIDLY obese this was most definately the choice for me

I'm in process of getting approval and trying to decide which one. Would love to hear feedback on why you chose bypass. Thanks.

I had originally went in to have the sleeve. I had severe reflux, so surgeon said sleeve may not be a good choice for , might make reflux worse. So, I decided to go with gastric bypass, I figured if I was commited I may as well go all the way. The weight loss was greater with the bypass also.

I choose the RNY b/c out of the 3 options is the one w/more research, w/more wt loss chances and I would say w/more positive outcomes . I rather have WLS once (RNY) than have the lap-band and have to revise it later....And sleeve vs RNY well again research is the top reason, second reason is that the RNY is reversible if you want it in the future. Good luck in your decision ;)

I looked at the sleeve first, after meeting someone who had it to get rid of diabetes and it had. It has a max usually of 12 months, does achieve pretty good weight loss and is a lot less invasive, i.e. its introduced without an major op like the RNY Gastric Bypass. However I then looked at the band and RNY and decided RNY was for me. RNY is much more of a committment combining the benefits of both cutting the size of the stomach and the bypassing of the start of the duodenum. This is important for very obese people who need all the weapons available when fighting fat, however that does make one better than another, they all have there place. In fact I think many people will find the sleeve enough and it carries much less risk and pain. However the sleeve has a max time and after that time you can regain weight if your mindset is wrong, whilst the RNY is a lifetime committment. Good luck and check whats best for you.

I considered the sleeve for purely selfish reasons. With the sleeve you don't lose as much weight but you also don't "dump" and my greedy self was thinking oh yea I'll get the sleeve and still be able to have my Pepsi and stuff....I was originally 429 pounds....402 on the day of surgery which was 3/22/12....I'm 375 today...

i had the lap band in 2009. i lost 70lbs the first yr. then i slowly gained it back because the band loosened and i could get it the right fill. i just converted to gastric bypass 9 days ago and im very happy i did. ive lost 25lbs since the day of surgery :) couldnt be happier with the choice. and i honestly have no cravings for sweets or nething bad.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
