I have some questions 4 newly post op patients.

How does, rice n noodles go down after surgery. My Dr. Said those usually give ppl hard times. And what about lettuce like greens and shell fish. Has anyone tried wine or anything yet. How about steak. What do you guys have problems with.

Rice, Pasta, bread I was told not to try to 6 months out because people normally have trouble. I have tried pasta and it made me very full and very sick. chicken does not work for me at all. I keep trying it because it has always been my favorite.

I have not tried wine but my friend who had surgery two weeks before me can drink anything beer wine or cocktails.

I had surgery 12-20-11. I have tried fish, and ground beef with no problems at all. I tried steak this past week. It did not go so well. I have tried most veggies just no lettuce yet. For fruit I have tried strawberries, bananas, apples, blueberries, raspberries, plums, mangos. I only had one piece of fresh fruit of each of these and they went ok.

I eat the Adkins bars a lot and the Quest bars. I start each day with my Bariatric Advantage Protein shake and try to get in one Isopure drink a day as well. I also use the Kellogg's Protein Water mix in all the Water I drink.

Oh, I use the bariatric pantry Soups. Love the Tomato Soup from there also I use the protein tea from there.

Thank you. How long were you on your liquid diet. And how long before you tried fish. What types have you tried. Do you eat shrimp or crab or anything.

I did Clear liquids for one week, full liquids for two weeks, purée food for two weeks, soft foods for two weeks, then to regular diet. I tried white fish like talapia in the soft food phase and tuna salmon. I have not tried shrimp or crab but others tried it during the soft phase and did great with it.

Try Isopure drinks. They come in seven flavors and you can get them at GNC or the Vitamin shoppe. They are 160 calories and 40 g of Protein. They saved me. I have a revision on 2-29-12 to fix a twisted intestine. food would not stay down. Doing great now. I only get diarrhea when I eat something to high in sugar. Normally I throw up and get diarrhea from anything with more than 2 g sugar.

I have tried chili and like it and it likes me. Black Beans are great too. My pouch likes them and they are loaded with Protein.

I feel really great when I get in enough protein. I was doing so much with aspartame that I was gettin diarreia from that. My friend says that milk gives her diarreia so she switched to coconut milk.

Before I was released from the hospital they said I had an obstruction in my intestines bc I couldn't get down anything not even my spit. I really hate the taste of protein I'm ready for real food again. I've been having a lot of heart burn lately n dry eyes n mouth. I don't know why I have to be on my liquid diet so long. But I'm kinda regretting this surgery.

I was feeling the same way with regret but now that I am finally able to eat some things and have more choices it is better. The isopures do not taste like Protein drinks, more like gatoraide.

Have you tried purée cottage cheese. It worked for me and was on my full liquid list. I also like the sunkist Protein Shots grape flavor. Taste like grape real grape not the fake taste.

Also with the heart burn, I have had here for over 15 years. After my surgery it got worse. My surgeon suggested digestive enzymes. They made the difference. I take one before each meal and have not have heart burn.

BMI weight busters in crystal lake IL is where I purchase them. They have a website and ship everywhere. I am sure you can purchase them at most vit shops too. Worth a try to get ride of heart burn.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
