Road Warrior Sleevers

I travel extensively internationally and I'll admit that over the last several years I've enjoyed eating my way across Europe, Asia and Africa. But I'm 2 weeks post sleeve surgery now and I leave for a week in India, 3 weeks in NZ and a week in Beijing starting at 4 weeks post op. I've stocked up on bags of Jay Robbs egg white and whey Protein powders and I'm assuming I'll be able to get a poached egg for Breakfast. But I wanted to know if there were any other road warrior sleevers who could give me the benefit of their experiences.

I'm a road warrior too and 15 days out. I think we'll be able to get what we need through contact with the expat communities for the long term. You'll get everything you need in NZ, it's just China and India which might be a little trickier. If you can't find a body-building shop to stock on the bare minimum; as you rightly say - poached eggs ahoy! :)

Watch out for the seasonings in Indian food.. I love curries, etc.. But I am sure once I have the sleeve i won't be able to tolerate this as much.

Weirdly, I can still tolerate spicy food, but my husband no longer can eat it QUITE as spicy as before. It's so individual, it's odd.

At 4 weeks post-op you're on soft foods?

I haven't travelled internationally since being sleeved, but some of the small towns I've been to, might as well have been TImbuktoo :) Plus there's no time to go to stores when you're traveling for work.

I traveled at 4 weeks and took lots of Protein powder, Protein Soup packets, and Protein Bars. It's easy enough to get ground meat everywhere, chicken and fish are plentiful in both China and India, so you should be okay on both fronts at mealtimes I'd assume. The bigger issue for me during my travels has been airport time, and snack times in between meals. Hence the protein powders, bars and Soups such as ProtiDiet packets.

I am not sure what your doctor has for your dietary schedule but if you are allowed poached eggs then is it possible for you to enjoy the Proteins like tandoori chicken although in smaller bites/servings. Possibly shred it with some liquid to make more acceptable or digestable. Soups where my favorite post op. Good luck to you!

Thank you so much for mentioning the ProtiDiet soups! I hadn't seen that brand before. Pre-surgery I travelled with my Jay Robb eggwhite and whey protein mixes and Designer Whey Protein 2Go pouches (especially for the airport and planes). I've just ordered the non-noodle soups and chili to add to that. Between those and poached eggs, I'm much more confident about this upcoming marathon trip. Thanks!

Oh one more thing is roasted edamame with salt. Not sure if your diet then allows, but definitely high protein, highly portable, able to eat without utensils. I'd also suggest while in India, do a lot of dals, Beans, and paneer. Easy to eat and decent protein. I'm sure they'd blend for you if you asked. Also kababs ( the ground meat kinds) are a good snack and easy to eat esp if you ask for yogurt or raita with it.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback! I'm 10 days into my trip (done with India and now in NZ) and thought I'd update in case this helps others in the future. I did fine in India, but I used an abundance of caution. My biggest fear was getting sick from food or Water so soon after surgery. So, I decided to play it safe and used only filtered water, my Protein Shakes, and the tuna I brought with me. I'm almost 6 weeks post op now and have 3 weeks in NZ. I have the luxury of being in the same hotel room for the next 10 days with a small refrigerator. I'm going to look for a market so I can add avocado and greek yogurt back to my diet. BTW-- NZ and Australia are VERY particular about what they let you bring in. They didn't have a problem with my foil pouches of tuna, but the Jay Robb egg white and whey Protein powders got looked at pretty hard. If there's any doubt, make sure you declare it so customs can clear you. Looking forward to 3 weeks in the land of the Hobbits. Thanks everyone!

I'm so glad you posted! I was thinking about you yesterday, wondering how you were getting on. Not drinking the Water in a different country is a good thing. I grew up in India, but after 27 years away, I get violently ill after I drink the Water. It's not that it's "unclean", it's that we don't have immunities against whatever it has.

Dear gamegirl,

I am an indian living in the Uk and vegetarian, had my sleeve in sept this year and been asked to start eating now. My problem is my diet is not classically Indian or western, and major problem as a vegetarian. would you know if there are any books or repipes which you could advise me about.

So glad you posted and are doing well on the road. I too, travel weekly, but am always in the USA. The first few weeks it was hard to not eat at the airport. Amazing what habits I had. Now it's easier. I seem to live one taco at a time, only eating the insides and not the tortilla. One taco, either egg and cheese, or ground beef or chicken and cheese will get me through a meal. I got really tired of the hotel eggs that were cooked and kept warm for hours, so had to find Breakfast tacos. Occasionally I will have Greek yogurt. I have a real problem with portions, not that I eat too much, but that I feel like I insult the place if I leave most of the food behind. I usually pack a box to go and get silverware, in case I see a homeless person on the street. They are usually happy to have my leftovers for themselves or to share with their dog.

It's not as tricky as I worried it might be. I always have Protein bars or powder with me, and I'm not as tempted to eat all the crap as I was. Loosing clothing sizes helps to keep me motivated.

I realize this might not help you in NZ, but you are not alone out there.

My world, on the road, used to be filled with the focus of finding a "fulfilling" meal, which I failed at usually, so would just continue to eat until I couldn't eat anymore. So glad to be free of this neurosis.

I do have some suggestions. In an airport rushing around but if you PM me I can share what I've learned. :)

ProtiDiet bouillion are delicious and has only 60 calories with 15 grams of protein..I surely will be tasting this during my first week after surgery.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
