Alcohol calories same as others?

Recommended Posts

Yet wondering...if I am consuming some alcohol but staying within my calorie requirements and exercising...will that slow my weight loss?

I love spinning and core exercises, tabata, etcetera but I also like a couple glasses of wine a couple times a week. I'm keeping my food carbs low, too. Just wondering about others experiences.

FYI--I am almost 5 months out. Down 63 lbs--275 to 212. Eating about 1000/ day and exercising 4-5 times week with good workouts IMO.

If you want a glass of wine that is fine just make sure you account for the calories and carbs just like anything else you eat. I too enjoy a glass every know and then. :) If you have a carb counting book alcohol might be listed and it is interesting which ones are higher than others. :)

And be sure you aren't sacrificing nutrition to have wine ;)

Sugar in alcohol metabolizes really easily to fat. Protein is harder to turn to fat. I'd try a little and see now you feel.

Citation Needed!

The body will always turn excess calories into fat if you are consuming more than you burn each day, but it takes more than 1000 cal/day to keep your body alive. In terms of other health issues (liver and such,) I suppose other calories are probably more "healthy" than booze. But as long as calories in < calories out, you will lose weight.

Let's start with this one that elaborates on what I was saying http://voices.yahoo.com/understanding-thermogenic-effects-food-533904.html

Pubmed has a ton more.

You realize you just asked a researcher and a scientist and a former academic for citations, right?

LOL!

Also traditional calorie math doesn't work on people who are on VCLD.

Good. I also worked in metabolic physiology labs for years and loved every second of it. But the yahoo article doesn't cite what papers support it.

Do you really believe some people can violate the 1st law of thermodynamics? "Traditional calorie math" works on CARS!!! If you measure gasoline in calories and then put a car on a scale with a treadmill-type device, it will gain weight if you add fuel (calories) faster than it is burning them. And it will always lose weight if it burns fuel faster than you add fuel.

Energy cannot be destroyed, only changed from one form to another. A calorie is the amount of energy necessary to increase 1 cubic centimeter 1 degree Celsius.

no violation of laws, simply a matter of not assuming that metabolic rates are a constant function driven by nothing other than weight/age, (e.g., all 250 lb women lose weight if they eat 1200 calories) and that individual "machines" (humans) process information/calories differently, and that many other factors impact weight gain and loss rather than just calories in/calories out.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
