spice and hot foods

Recommended Posts

I was just banded yesterday so I am sort of planning ahead, my question is how did you do with spice and things like tabasco. I love mexican and other really spicy foods I am just wondering if any of you had any problems eating these once banded?

also my doctor said I could have a smoothie did any of you use yogurt or fruit in smoothie the first few days after surgery?

i eat and LOVE spicy foods!

when you get to mushies you can have refried Beans or black beans with sourcream and a smidge of cheese and blended salsa.

if you have bad gas pains (from surgery) the first 2 weeks you may want to wait on adding the beans as it will make you gassy all over again.

Whether you can tolerate spicy foods is such a personal thing, I don't know if our experiences will be helpful. I've had no problem, but then I have an Iron stomach. It stands to reason that if someone has a more sensitive stomach prior to banding, the surgery could easily make it more prone to irritation. So the question is, how are YOU with spicy food? :)

It is not uncommon for me to eat fresh jalapeno's so I have always been able to handle spice. Hope I can now. on anoyher subject frist couple of days after surgery what did you eat? Did you follow the three meals a day rule or just sort of graze? Today I have had 1 cup of Jello, then a few hours later about 1 cup of Tomato Soup then a few hours later another cup of jello. I just want to make sure I don't strech out my stomach. Anyone have any guidelines?

Yippie.... another spicy food eater! Im waaaaay down here in the south, actually cajun country (Louisiana) and Ive always been able to tolerate the spicy things just fine... before AND after. My doc.'s orders were anything that fits through a straw for the first 2 weeks. So I did popsicles, slim fast, milkshakes... but my favorite was the Spicy V-8 juice!!! YUM! Blue Bunny brand has MANY suger free frozen things... popsicles, choc. bars, etc. I camped out on that isle everytime we went to Walmart.< /p>

Good luck... and WELCOME!

You can't stretch out your stomach on liquids. My rule of thumb was to have something whenever I wanted it, because the worst thing I could do for my state of mind was to get too hungry. I stuck to liquids and mushies, but didn't worry about calories or times of meals or anything. What's the point? Getting banded isn't about finding a new diet to make us miserable; there'll be plenty of time for learning the new way to eat after healing.

Amen, Glory hallalujah, Alex. I am so glad to hear you say that.. lol.

I've been reading some of the other boards and people are going on and on about a half cup of this, a half a cup of that, this many calories, that many calories. It sounds like the same old diet mentality to me. It makes me tired. lol.

This is my first post so please be patient with me.

I am writing because I eat spicy foods, too. I am having a problem with not drinking while eating. I can take the heat, but I like it a lot better with some iced tea. What do you do about that?

I had surgery (Dr. Spivak in Houston) on 7/28/04 and have not yet had a fill.

p_momma, are you on solid foods yet? If so, you might try little nibbles on a low-salt ritz cracker to help w/ the hot and spicy. But do it easily. You don't want to pb! You really need to avoid drinking anything w/ your foods.

I was banded back in May and after 3 fills, haven't reached the point where I'm full after a little bit of food. But being Mexican, I love 'hot salsas' (I mean hot) that I make myself, and I haven't had any trouble. Good lucj

Before being banded I loved eating spicy foods, but after my most recent fill I just can't really stomach spicy things anymore. Mildly spicy is ok, but anything hotter than that and I get almost an acid reflux feeling. I don't get it with anything but very spicy foods. It's a shame, because I love the spice so much, but now I try to stay away from it.

Hi CateringQueen,

I love spicy foods and the only thing I have noticed is that I cannot take as much heat now that I have my band and I did prior to getting banded... BUT, I believe this is not really due to my band, but due to the fact that I no longer drink with my meals. I use to love something really spicy washed down with a nice cold drink or better yet an ice cold Coors light!!! Now, I don't drink Coors light (carbonation) and I don't drink for at least an hour after meals (another band rule)... so I cannot take the type of heat I was able to handle before.

Otherwise, I still enjoy my spicy foods. Hope you will too!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
