Hi Everyone! I just got home today from having my VSG surgery. I feel relieved that it is over and excited about all the new experiences ahead. I was wondering if I absolutely have to crush up my meds when I have no problems swallowing them one at a time. I'd appreciate any advice you have to offer.

I couldnt imagine swallowing a pill right now (4 days post op). Yes, I would just crush them and swallow.

Ask your Dr. Mine said it is fine to swallow if you can but others prefer you to crush them

Mine also said I could swallow them whole if I could. My big pill (Gabapentin) was held off a few weeks till I felt confident taking a horse pilll. My back pain got the best of me tho and I started taking them again.

I take numerous pills a day and taking them 1 at a time was tedious. Now that I'm almost 9 wks out, I take 3-4 of them at a time. I wouldn't crush pills if I was told to. Most meds tatse so nasty. And the tube to ur stomach is the diameter of a med size carrot, plenty big to acommodate most pills.

Good luck with ur recovery!

I was taking my pills like normal after my leak tests were done 24 hours after surgery,

Ask your doc but should be no issue.

Ugh, I was never able to swallow a crushed pill. I tried....tried to hide it in applesauce, pudding, etc and it was just SO nasty! So, I ended up just slicing it one or two times to make it really small and did it slowly that way (took me all day to get my 4 pills down, but at least I did). Now, I can mainly take them whole and at one sitting :) It does get easier!

I take a bunch of pills for a cardiac condition and when I asked my surgeon about dosage & effectiveness after the sleeve, he said irregardless of crushing or taking the pills whole, I would need to run tests to determine the levels and effectiveness of the medications due to possible changes in absorption. Then they would make any adjustments necessary. Just food for thought.

I got sent home with Dilaudid & an anti nausea which are both tiny, I've only taken one pain pill & haven't touched the anti nausea meds. My third pill is My anti acid pill, it seems huge, I think, b/c I can't swallow a big amount of Water with it. I've gotten it down 2 days in a row that I've been home. My dr said swallowing them & the RX meds i was already prescribed was perfectly fine. Good luck, I hope it gets easier for u!

At my 1 week post-op appt, my doc said I could begin swallowing my pills one at a time and to give 5 minutes between pills. Your doc might have different advice.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
