Anyone have a reasonable explanation why we are not to drink from straws? I love my iced tea with lots of ice and am so tired of having ice crash down on my nose when I drink. Initially when I asked my NUT she stated it was to keep us from swallowing air. Well I experimented and took a sip from a straw. The tea sat in my mouth just as it does when drinking from a glass and I swallowed without taking in air. Just does not add up to me. Sometimes I think they just make crap up to see if we are capable of following the rules.

Anyone have a better explanation?

Well, if it made more sense than swallowing air, then I wish you could jog your memory ;). Otherwise I am feeling super tempted to have my iced tea in luxury.

My doctor said that if I drink from a straw and it doesn't bother me, go for it. And I do :)

I think I like your doctor. I can understand if when using a straw you just gulp it down quickly then it may be an issue. I have mastered the art of small, slow sips throughout the day and just can't see how the mechanics of using the straw to take small slow sips changes the act of swallowing in any way.

Ty for the input. :)

Basically it allows excess air to get into your stomach and can give you gas. That is the only reason that I have heard and got from my research. It may not hit you instantly but rather later in the day. I am not advising you to drink it with a straw but if you talk to your surgeon at your next post OP appointment and you have no problems from it at all then maybe it just doesn't affect you like it can with others. I have seen some people on this site (and others) over the last few months from random browsing that always got major gas right before bedtime and traced it to using a straw. But we all tolerate things differently. :P

Hmm, that is interesting. I didn't think about it possibly having a cumulative effect throughout the day. If I do decide to give it a careful try I will make sure to look out for that.

Ty :)

My hospital gave me a straw right after surgery. I actually don't take in as much air with a straw as I do without. I can tolerate Water much better with a straw. I am 9 months out and water is still an issue, especially first thing in the morning. I use a straw every day in my Tervis cup with no problems.

After surgery I had such a hard time getting in all my liquids that I started using a straw and doubled my intake. That's the only way I can drink! I am 6mos out and haven't had a problem at all with the straw, I actually found I took more air trying to drink straight out of a glass that had ice in it trying to avoid the ice.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
