Dr. Beausoleil (Moncton N.B.)

I tried TLBC. i was very disappointed as they were worried that the medicare allotment was not to the specs of what the surgeon wanted for pay.... which are the host province standards... blah blah blah... they all gave me the run around.

Hey All,

Maybe you can all help me here .

I am able to advise lap band surgery is not listed as an insured service under MSI.

Therefore, in order for any costs to be paid for this surgery, your specialist physician has to request prior approval from MSI.

All physicians are aware of the necessary process in writing to our Medical Consultant outlining the details for prior approval. At that time a response letter is forwarded to the specialist, who in turn would advise you of the outcome.

I am not privy to what criteria is reviewed as each case has to be determined on a individual basis.

I trust this is helpful.

-----

My question is does the letter to MSI have to come from The surgeon preforming teh LAP-BAND® like Dr.Beausoiel or my family doctor??

Also Dr.Beausoiel wouldnt have my full medical condition that contributed to me seeking a referel from my family doctor to see him.So would he tell MSI why I would need this surgery based on his finding or findings in my medical chart from my family doctor??

What worries me is I have only seen my family doctor for 9 months. He isnt a doctor to care about ones weight and says keep walking.

Since I gained this weight I had been put on anti depression medicine and had my gall bladder out. I am on Domperidone and Pantoloc for stomach problems and gastronal relux issues and bowel issues. I have irregular periods and very long periods. In Ontario my old doctor told me I had Polysystic Ovarian Syndrom but my doctors here cant find that........I am afraid that IF (as its a small town and not many peple have had it done here and he believes walking will do the trick) my family doctor recommends me he wont explain the reason as stated above why I need this surgery.......I think he thinks the weight is not the other problem to the conditions I have....................What do I do ?

Thanks,

Melanie

You must be sooo pleased to have a date - I know I would be. I am still waiting for my initial visit. Thursday Jan.22 - barring bad weather. As frustrating as the while process is - due to the waiting - I am anxious to get on with it. My wait to see Dr. B. was over 4 years!

Hi Inuit,

Congratulation, I'm so happy for you. Dr. Savoie, in Bathurst, is suppose to start his surgery in February. I know they were still waiting for medical equipment but that's what his secretary said. When you have your date it must feel like looking at a light at the end of a tunnel. That little light is the hope of a bran new life who's starting for you. It's your second chance in life.

Suzie, My enbocrinologist sent in a request to medicare to pay for wls in 2006. It was not approved until 2007. I had my initial consult with Dr. B on November 20, 08. I had the 8 hr info session on Dec 2, 08. I went for consent signing on January 12, 09. I have to go for pre admission on Jan 27,09. I will need to go back again once more before surgery on February 12, 09. Hope this helps give you some hope.

hello everyone, I'm new to the site and wondering if anyone has had their surgery donwe with Dr. Sylvain Beausoleil in Moncton New Brunswick?

Hi Sherrylynn,

I had my band put in June 2007, by Dr. Beausoleil. I have never regretted it. Weight loss is a lot slower than bypass but a much less invasive surgery.

I am going to my family physician to get a referral to Dr. Beausoleil. I am wondering how long it takes to get in to the referral apt?

I am wondering this as I need time to save up for the procedure. I know some had to wiat 2-3 years for the actual date of surgery after their first rferal meeting .But how long does it take to get to see him for the referal from the time your family dr makes the apt?

I know that MSI told me Dr.Beausoliel would have to write them teh letter as to why I would benefit from what ever procedure(Lap Band, bypass or etc) he recommends..... Is this the norm?

Thanks,

Mel

You know, I think your best bet would be to just call Dr. B's office, and ask the secretary your questions. At least you'll have the answers from someone who reallllly know! Ask how long of a wait (typically) after your dr. sends in your referral until you get your first appointment, and how long between all of the other steps. Maybe also when you have to pay for the band itself would be good to know. ( make sure you hound them a few days after your Dr should have sent in your referral, checking whether they've received it or not, to make sure your doctor did actually send it)

I don't think there should be any special wait for getting in to see your family doctor for a referral. Just as long as you would normally wait for any other appointment to see him. I saw some of your other posts, and if he isn't willing to make the referral for you, find another doctor, any other dr. I really don't think it matters if they've known you very long. You'll tell them what your issues are. If necessary, they can get your file from your last Dr. I didn't have to get a referral for my banding, but I did have to go see a doctor to do a pre-op checkup before surgery, and I just saw whoever I could at the walkin clinic.

And yes, that would be normal, Dr. Beausoleil having to write up/send in something to justify why you should have this surgery. I'm sure it's not anything that you need to be involved in, or ask him to do. He's been through the process enough that I'm sure he knows what's gotta be done. Just make sure you ask him what the next steps are.

Good luck! You should definitely post what you find out, because I think there's a lot of confusion as to what the process is to get covered in NS, NB, and PEI

(now that I look back at these other posts, I remember something about having to get your referral from a specialist, not just your family Dr. This is something they'd be able to confirm if you called Dr. B's office though. Do it!!)

Oh yeah, and why not check out the Dr in Bathurst? Get referrals to both, and see who comes up first.

Just wondering what you mean about that? (The referral from family dr and lap band specialist for who?MSI?)

Im looking up the number now.

Thanks,

Mel

What I meant is that I think I read somewhere that you have to get some kind of specialist (like an endocrinologist) to give you the referral to Dr. B rather that just a regular old family doctor. But this might have been in New Brunswick. I lived in NB and NS and was trying to figure the whole thing out in both provinces.

I also could be completely wrong, so yeah, find out from the secretary and let me know what she says !

Hey Argon,

I tried calling the office but it was closed. I will try maybe tomorrow and find out if the referral is need from a family dr or another type of specialist. And wait times?

What is your update?

Where are you at in the process?

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
