Self pay initial consult question

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this is a option for you, but many people here that have done self-pay, have had a great experience going to Mexico.

They are real doctors performing surgery is real hospitals... I am having Sleeve surgery done next Friday with Dr. Garcia and I'm paying $4700 which includes all pre-op and post-op tests, leak tests, meds, 2 nights hospital and 3 night hotel (5 Star Marriott Tijuana Hotel), transportation too and from the SD Airport.

Before spending the last year researching WLS in Mexico, if someone told me to goto Mexaico to have surgery, I would have told them they were out of their minds !!!! lol However... it is really safe, and some of the worlds best doctors are doing WLS in Mexaico.

Again, not sure if this is a option for you... But I know I would have NEVER considered of going to Mexico before I researched it.

Thank you for you input!

I actually am from El Paso, TX which is across the street from Juarez, MX. I have read the rave reviews about the experiences from Mexico. However, my husband would NEVER consider that! lol

Maybe if we were looking at $18,000 instead of closer to $11,000, I might push harder.

The doctors I'm interested in are affiliated with Emory here in Atlanta which is a big deal (to me, anyway) and am looking forward to the initial consult. I gues I will go from there!

Thanks again!

Do you mind sharing who you are looking at? I am in TN and am looking at all of my options. So far the best self pay I have found price-wise is $12,200 - and that's in TX. Atlanta would be a much easier trip. Thanks!

I'm looking at Dr.William Johnson at Atlanta Bariatrics. I've also seen posts regarding Dr. Titus Duncan (not at home so don't know his website right now) but his site says $9999.00 for the sleeve.

I was called to set up my appointment and the initial consultation will be $175 and then a separate appointment with the nutritionist will be $50.

Appointment in 2 weeks! Can't wait for that first appointment!

I see you've already scheduled your appointment, but my surgeon was able to bill my initial consultation to insurance so I only paid my co-pay. I also had my pre-surgical testing done via my PCP (blood work, x-ray, EKG, etc) and that was covered by my insurance as well. I was self-pay for my surgery, as my insurance company wouldn't cover any sort of bariatric surgery. Just wanted to put it out there as an option!

Thanks so much!! We are in between insurance right now as hubby started a new job and he is the insurance carrier. I spoke with them about coverage so I know it isn't covered. Maybe I can wait until our new insurance kicks in to get the testing done!

Insurance doesn't kick in until Nov 1 :(

Would love to have this done before the end of the year. Hoping since I will be self-pay, I can get it done sooner than if I had insurance!

Thanks again for the info!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
