What should I be eating...I need help!

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I am hoping and praying for some help here. I am 6 months out (self pay Mexico) I just don't know what to eat. I don't like fish, seafood or eggs so I am struggling with what I should be eating (balanced). I usually have a small spinach salad with some pumpkin seeds and dried cranberries...I make a dressing of balsamic vinegar and olive oil. I snack on raw fruit or yogurt or some goldfish crackers. I still have a Protein Shake in the morning and try to get in my Water, some days are better then others.

If anyone can offer any advice I would appreciate it. I have been stalled for months :(

Hi!! I'm hoping I can help.

I am just wondering why you aren't eating more substantial meals? For me.. The surgery was supposed to help me with Portion Control, and it has. I'm eating smaller amounts but I'm eating meats, carbs, veggies, etc. I found that a lean cuisine has perfect portions. (Before surgery, I could eat 2 or 3 of them) the supermarket near me has a web site with really good recipe's, all very simple and for the most part inexpensive. www.publix.com loom under "aprons" you'll find good recipe's. I think you can eat anything you want as long as its in moderation. If you question the size of the meal- just turn the one meal into two meals by splitting it in half- first half a lunch, second half a dinner!! I wish you all the luck in the world!!!

chicken, cheese, beef, milk, tofu, edamame. These are all good sources of Protein.

Your list of what you are eating does not contain much Protein at all. Most people will tell you "protein first"!! Me included.

Fruits, vegetables and goldfish crackers have lots of carbs.

Protein first, then produce, then fruit IF you have room, carbs last - but really you should be too full for those.

I woul recommend logging your food intake on something like My Fitness Pal so you know exactly how much protein you are getting in. That is your most important number! At LEAST 60 grams per day.

No Laura I'm not a vegetarian. Lol I eat chicken mostly.

I am afraid to eat more. I have been stalled for months now...I didn't realize fruit was considered a carb !! Like I said I eat alot of chicken I guess I'm afraid to eat it all the time. Are veggies considered carbs too ?

Lately I've been eating polenta (corn meal) with some chilli (1/2 cup) approx.

I appreciate the responses guys.

to Newbie and Aspiring Avangelist.... thank you for your info... I'm newly sleeved- July 22nd, and am just 3 days on my soft food phase. I have had a dark cloud of regret over me regarding my surgery decision. Most of it, I think, thinking I may never get to enjoy carbs in moderation again- like pizza night with my family, or taco night.... sounds kinda childish, but truthful. I also have a difficult time stomaching anymore Protein Drinks at this point :( big worry of my hair falling out.... feeling kinda hopeless...

Girl I boil a whole chicken every week! :P

I eat lots of chicken too..

I put chicken on my salads everyday. I eat ground turkey parties extra lean patties can be up to 25 grams of Protein per patty.

For Snacks I do low sodium turkey meat from the deli counter. Or hummus and veggies.

Veggies = GOOD carbs don't worry about those!

Bad carbs are anything processed!

Polenta? Umm I don't think it has any redeeming qualities.

Hehe.. Don't knock the chicken :P

Do you like tofu?

I buy extra firm tofu and dry fry it and munch on that too thorough the week. I eat it plain dip it in hummus and you could crumble it up in chili too.

My Surgeon told me to eat in this way....Protein, Vegetables, fruit and last but not least true carbs....

I eat fruit as a snack and keep the veggies and Protein for meals....Very few carbs like bread, Pasta, rice and potatoes etc.

I am always looking for new things to try....and I love grocery shopping now because I take the time to read everything....

I am addicted to food like all of us are...i don't want to replace my food addiction with another food addiction....constantly worrying about what I am eating.....I enjoy my meals now and eat what I want...

No refined sugar though..That is the only rule I have made for myself..10 months out and still have not had any refined sugar....Have not wanted it either....

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this blog "the world according to eggface" she has tons of recipes, advice, pictures of her daily intake, etc. I have several pages of her blog bookmarked to try once Im on real food again. The mini meat loaf recipes look especially good to me right now! ;)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
