Traveling 17 days post op...any diet tips?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have some ideas about traveling shortly after the surgery? We will be flying from Houston to Boston staying in that area a week (NH, CT, MA) then flying home to Houston. I'm doing well on full liquids right now and will be in puree/soft foods stage by then. I know I'll take some Protein Powder, but after that I have no master plan! Has anyone had to travel while still on the post-op diet?

If you can do bars, maybe try and take some of those. You'll be in a good stage by the time you travel so you should get lots of suggestions from the other post-ops on what you can take/have.

I'm in the same boat - will be traveling 2 weeks post-op. Some ideas (and will look forward to others): Starbucks has greek yogurt. Wendy's has chili that can be mashed up. McDonalds has oatmeal (prob not much Protein though). Premier shakes are pre-made and can be bought at costco - high Protein, low carb. Although you said you'll be bringing powder on the road, I think I will pack some pre-mades for when I'm not in a position to do the mixing. With regard to the mixing, at Target/Walmart, you can get a mini-blender that holds 16 oz and is very travel friendly.

To the extent you'll have a refrigerator, cottage cheese, string cheese might be good options. Same mashed bananas.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

Very good to know! I'll check out the blender at Target and I think I'll look at some fast food websites to see if they have any nutritional info on their menu items. My plan is taking shape! Thanks so much :)

Just curious on how it went for you?? I will be traveling during my soft food stage as well. I know we will plan to go to a few fast food restaurants while we travel and I'm trying to plan ahead. Breakfast - eggs, lunch - ??

Thanks!

I travelled when on soft foods and I did just fine. I did a shake a day, yogurt, when possible, took babybel cheeses with me, and also packed a packet or two of ProtiDiet Soups. I didn't need the Soups. I had scrambled egg for breakfast, the insides of a chicken sandwich for lunch (ordering a sandwich no mayo, no veggies, and no bun confused everyone) and crab cake for dinner.

I also asked the Starbucks lady for an iced soy latte blended with a scoop of Protein powder. You might want to doctor that with a pump of sugar-free Syrup if you like your coffees sweet.

On the plane I got a fruit and cheese plate and ate half the cheese, put the rest away for snack. On the way back, I ate half a Quest bar on the plane. Totally doable.

I found the problem was not whether I could find food to eat. The problem was it was TOO EASY to find food to eat--including things I really shouldn't eat and didn't, but they tempted me. It was an exercise in self-discipline for sure.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
