Surgery Aug 15 and New Job Sept 3, Can it be done?

Recommended Posts

Help! I haven't been working but was job searching. I am scheduled for surgery Aug 15 and just offered a job! The latest I can start is September 3. Will it be possible? I work as a nurse practitioner and will be working 4 days a week, no lifting but will be training the first 4 weeks. First few days will be slow. I am freaking out about this. I know once I start a new job, it will be awhile before I have time off for surgery. Thanks.

I think you should be fine. The first week post op is kinda rough but after that you should be noticing big improvements from day to day.

I'm an RN, currently working prn, as a consultant so no lifting for me either and if I was called into work two~3 wks post op, I would have been just fine.

Good luck to you!

You'll be tired, so you migh do little but work eat and sleep for a bit after the job starts...

If you won't be lifting you would be fine. The first 3 or 4 days were the worst for me but day 4 was up walking to the store and around our complex. Just make sure you still get all of your liquids and Protein in while you are at your new job or you will find yourself extremely tired!

I am in health care and went back to work 11 days after surgery and was fine. Just try to keep your Water with you and keep sipping all day. I have a hard time getting the water in at work since I can't really drink while seeing patients.

Aside from complications, you should be just fine. You're fairly low bmi, so I assume reasonably healthy (ass-u-me, I know). If I had to, and could have guaranteed staying in the office, and not having to go out into the field, I could have easily gone back to work on day 5 or 6, with the only difficulty being making sure I got my liquids and Protein in appropriately and I would have been in bed within about an hour of getting home.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
