Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I am new to this app. I just got my surgery date today and I am very excited. I honestly have no idea what to expect, but I know my life is going to be completely different. My current BMI is 56 and current weight is 357.4, with a height of 5'7. I have a lot of weight to lose and I know its not going to be easy, but I am fully commited to a new life.

This is a decision you make in life that not everyone supports or understands. On here you can be open and honest about everything. When is your date if you don't mind me asking?

Hi and welcome! I, like you, are new to the forum and the whole sleeve process. I am so excited and ready for the journey! (not gonna lie, nervous too!) I have attended a seminar, met with the nutritionist, physcolgist and with my surgeon yesterday. Just waiting on my Letter of support from my PCP to submit to mu insurance for final approval for the surgery. Meeting with my PCP on Monday for a physcial and hopefully give me the letter. Fingers crossed! Wishing you all the best with your journey also!!!!

My appointment with my PCP to get my support letter was almost more nerve wracking than my surgery date! I felt like I was going to my dad asking if I could go to prom with a Senior as a Freshman or something silly like that. It's crazy how much power they hold over your future. I wanted that letter BAD! Lol.

My surgery date is sept 6...and it cannot come soon enough!

Though, I am finding that I am really running through an array of emotions today. I am thinking that since getting my surgey date yesterday, I am starting to realize this is really going to happen. It seems like it has taken forever to get here. I feel like I am starting the greiving process for my current life. I am looking at this as a positive thing though. this is an excellent chance for me to learn to cope with my feelings instead of feeding them. :-)

I'm so excited yet I know it not only changes your body but it changes your whole life. I'm ready for the new path. That's for sure!

Welcome!

Read as much as you can about the sleeve....go to a support group early in this process if you can--your surgeon and local hospitals should have support groups. There are a lot of books available, there are a bunch of UTube videos...even youtube videos of actual surgeries, if you are up for them.

FYI.......Glad I wasn't the only one who found going to their PCP difficult too.

Hello Newbie!

I am new to this site as well and I just got my date 2 days ago and I am having the same feelings as you are, I am excited and ready to do this. My date is Aug 13th and today has been my second day of liquod only and so far it has not been bad, I pray it stays this way. What I am kinda worried about is the weekend with no work and nothing to do all day, although I am not a big eater during the weekend I usually do eat three meals. I am 35 have been married 11years and have 2 children and they are all very supportive, my husband is actually trying to stick with my 2 weeks which will be interesting to see if he completes but he is trying :) . I look foward to all challenges ahead and Im determined this tool will work for me.

I think the worst part about the whole thing is the liquid diet lol woooo I felt like I was starving myself I was a pretty big eater and to have to just stop and do liquids man that was hard but after surgery I was not that hungry I mean I'm 1yr post op and I still have a little bit of trouble eating I can't eat big meals I kinda pick at whatever I make but I'm glad I lost 130 lbs the weight I had was making me miserable u will not regret doing this I may have a hard time eating but i never wanna be 295 again lol

Yes it will be very different there will be a lot of things u eat now that u like but for some reason after surgery some of the things I use to eat just made me sick I can't eat hamburger meat at all, no grease, and no sauces (and I'm Italian lol) but I'm so glad I got this done I will deal with this little issue lol but I was not in any pain after surgery so that's something u shouldn't really worry about I'm happy for u and good luck let me know how it goes :-)

Congrats! Time to find your favorite Protein Shake now. Good luck! You can relax now. Lol. BTW, I recommend Premier Protein shakes from SAM's club.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
