How to convince my dad that surgery in Mexico is not a scam?

Recommended Posts

8/9 seems to be a popular day. I'm sure you can meet with other sleevers in the SAN airport and go in a large group. Would that make you Father feel better? Have you checked out the August sleevers topic and connected with those peep?

Is it? I've been keeping an eye out here (both the August Sleevers and August 2013 Roll Call topics) and on FB for anyone else heading to Tijuana in that time frame and I can't find anyone! I keep missing people by like a day, heh. So... if anyone reading this will be there between the 8th and 13th, please message me! I would love a travel buddy to check in with. I think it would make both of us feel better.

I actually have four patients getting sleeved with Dr. Illan during that time frame. I will ask them to check this thread out and pm you, as two of them are going alone and probably love to get a buddy for support while there.

And Omar is absolutely wonderful! Express your concerns to him and they will do whatever to make you and your Dad feel more at ease. I've pestered Omar to death with all of my anxiety and worries... Lol

Thanks! I messaged her. I think part of my problem is I'm really not sure which doctors operate from which location, all I know for sure are Illan and Aceves out of Tijuana.

I feel a lot better having potential surgery/travel buddies, thank you saffikeagan and Susan!

Illan is out of florence hospital but you stay at Lucerna hotel- and I think so do Aceves patients but he actually does surgery in Mexicali. Dr. Garcia also works out of florence but his patients stay at the Marriott hotel.

Thank you! I knew about the hotel but wasn't sure which hospital. I'm really going to have to call Omar tomorrow, I think, I'm realizing that I don't know as much as I probably should. I admit that I'm really excited to see the hotel, lol, I've seen pictures and it just looks gorgeous. I'm really getting very excited about this whole thing.

Larinea was just on chat. She speaks spanish. She's more than happy to have you join her in your adventure!

I think that's his main problem. He's disabled and can't make the trip, but he's said several times that he wishes he could go. I kind of wish he could go with me because he's a pretty big, strong guy and I've always felt safer around him, but my mom is making the trip with me so that helps. Of course, he and my mom have been separated since I was 4, so that doesn't make him feel any better.

I wonder if he might feel better if he could Skype with the surgeon and ask any questions he might have directly? If it's that important to you that he feel comfortable, there's no harm in asking!

My boyfriend was extremely skeptical but a Skype conversation with my surgeon, where he was able to ask questions directly about qualifications, training, potential complications, etc., made him feel much more comfortable. I think seeing the doctor as a real person rather than some generic entity helped as well.

Wow, no kidding? I think I'll call his office tomorrow, I haven't actually talked to anyone over the phone yet. That's so cool that he does that. Maybe if my dad hears from the surgeon himself that his patients indeed make it safely to the operating table he'll feel better. Of course, I can hear my dad now, "well, sure, anyone could buy a lab coat off the street." :P But it will make me feel more comfortable, so that's the important thing.

Ha! I should have read ahead. :)

Yep, Dr Illan will Skype and did so with my boyfriend and I. It helped to hear about his training, the mechanics of the procedure, how he was going to handle my particular situation, etc. I know you said your Dad isn't computer savvy but many newer cell phone are capable of Skyping, so you could do it from your phone with your Dad.

Omar is wonderful.

I ended up going with Dr. Aceves but Omar and I still keep in touch via email checking on each other's progress.

Perhaps your dad can talk to Omar as well as Dr. Illan.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
