How did you decide if this was right for you vs other bariatric procedures

First, who knew typing the first post could make you feel so vulnerable?

I went to a seminar last week and had a consult with the Dr., I'm scheduled for the neutrinos list/physc portion in two weeks. My medical does not require a waiting period, so I guess I am a lucky one.

My question is, I thought going into the seminar I had my mind made but learned more about the sleeve. What were some of the factor of those that have had it and those that are choosing to have it? I have the Dr's input but would like everyday people that have experienced living as an over weight person.

Also, since I have not met with the nutritionalist what is the SF that everyone is talking about to add to shakes. Thanks for any input.

When I went in for the first time Dec 2011 the lapband was the newest best thing. I was a lightweight at 206 but had diabetes and a bunch of other stuff. I wish the Dr. would have went over my options more with me because if I knew then what I know now post revision May 6th to the sleeve my journey would have been a lot easier. Best of luck!

Well, the main reason I chose the sleeve was that it was the least creepy feeling of the barbaric surgeries. I really didn't like the idea of having my intestines rerouted.

As well, I have a friend who had the lap band 4 years ago and he was not successful at losing the weight - he found ways to eat around it. Plus he's had complications along the way, both with the band and getting it filled to the right size.

As for shakes, I don't add anything to mine. I drink the Premier Protein chocolate shakes and they taste very good. I've also tried EAS and Muscle Milk, they are okay, but Premier tastes the best to me.

I didn't know either LOL... just figured it out one day. I am still pre op so I figure I better learn all the lingo before my surgery in November :-)

I am going for the sleeve as it preserves the pyloric valve and isn't likely to cause malnutrition. Lapband has too many complications.

I am in it for the same reasons. August 12th. I start my two week diet tomorrow. I have been working towards it since Jan. it is really sinking in now. I am nervously excited!

I had the sleeve because:

I wanted a WLS option that relied on restriction, not malabsorption and one that didn't require ongoing maintenance.

The band would have left something foreign inside me and the port under my skin that would require periodic fills. Plus, I know me: I would have been feeling for that port under my skin.

The RNY would prevent me from taking some drugs (such as ibuprofin) or may cause issues with dumping (inability to eat sweets). Also, the malabsorption scared me and the blind organ thing was weird too. Plus the pyloric valve is removed and I have read the stoma used in its place can stretch.

DS was too extreme and my insurance doesn't cover it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
