My blood sugar has been dropping below 65 the past 2 mornings on my preop liquid diet. I think I need to reduce my long lasting insulin but I don't know how much!!!

So at 3 in the morning I am trying to raise it back up to stop shaking and feeling puky and so sick that I cheat. I drink milk but I grabbed a Protein Bar because its the healthiest option with a little sugar and then I felt fine..

But the whole this is I am on my preop and not supposed to have anything but liquids. Now I feel terrible but my brain doesn't function when my bs is so low :(

Guess I will call my PCP to see what he suggests..

Not feeling so great after a drop like that....

Yes, most certainly.

Sorry you are having problems. You and doc can sort this out.

You sugar level is more important than a perfect pre-op diet.

If you have an endocrinologist or PCP who normally handles your insulin dosing to treat your diabetes, I would consult with him/her in addition to your surgeon/RD who put you on the liquid plan. You don't want to jeopardize your health during this time and hypoglycemia in a diabetic patient can be very dangerous. I'm sure the dr will understand that you needed to get your blood sugar up. Hope you get things in control soon -- wishing you all the best.

everyone else is giving you the right advice about consulting your PCP...and it looks like you are taking that path...I am also a diabetic who was on both the maximum metformin dosage and 40 units of Lantus (long lasting) insulin each day pre-surgery...I did not have a pre-op diet, other than the day before surgery, but my dr had advised me to get off my meds altogether once I started the surgery prep diet...since my surgery (it's been almost 3 months now, the only med I take for diabetes is half of a metformin pill each morning (and I don't really need that)....please keep us updated as you work this out with your dr...hang in there and take care of yourself!

Everyone is exactly right, check with your PCP. I think you are probably right about reducing your long acting insulin. Pre surgery I was diabetic also, I was on 30 units of Levimir, and Janumet. Now I take nothing!!! I know it's rough right now, work with your doctor, and I would bet that post surgery you'll be one of the lucky ones taking nothing also.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
