Caffeine Post Op

Recommended Posts

I've read some of the posts about caffeine, and the caffeine issue seems to differ from doctor to doctor...

I don't drink coffee or tea, and stopped drinking soda, so when the NUT & I had our caffeine discussion, I was thinking: Not a problem...I don't consume any, period.

that was back in April.......however, I neglected to consider the iced tea I drink in the summer......

it has 10 calories and I believe 30 mg of caffeine. I mix it with 20-24 ounces of Water, and I sip it over a 4 hour period. (it's the 1/2 & 1/2 arnold palmer stix).....so I'm thinking each hour I'm taking in about 5-8 mg of caffeine.....and consume it once a day.

It doesn't seem like a lot of caffeine, but I'm wondering.....is it too much to consume post op? Is any caffeine too much? What are your thoughts? (I'll go back to my NUT and ask her about this too)

For a point of reference, the mayo Clinic has the following on their page for 8 oz of coffee.....

Generic Brewed coffee has 95-200 mg and Generic Brewed Decaf Coffee 2-12 mg (I assumed decaf had zero)

Many thanks!

EDITED: When I think about drinking this, I'm thinking down the road 6 months when our tummies are healed....thanks again!

I drink a cup of coffee every morning (regular) and I have iced tea almost every afternoon. My Dr. is fine with it, and I have had no problems. One of my favorite ways to get in some extra Protein is to mix in a K20 packet in with my iced tea to make an "Arnold Palmer" - the K20 packet is 30 calories, but has 5 grams of protein and 5 grams of Fiber.< /p>

I used to be a diet coke fiend, prior to surgery and pretty much my entire life. I have been caffeine free for about a month now, and it is something that I have always wanted to do. So, I have just taken it to the point that I am off it and won't go back to it.

I'm just curious if you would be satisfied with a decaf-ice tea?

My NUT said it was ok for me to have one Chike iced Protein coffee each morning and diet snapple tea or diet lipton tea throughout the day. I think all of those have caffeine in them. She still said no to anything carbonated. I'm over 8 mo PO though.

Absolutely.....it's not the caffeine, but the taste, and the convenience.....plus I have a boat load of them.....THANKS!

My doc is one of those who's quite fine with coffee, tea, etc. - at support group this past Monday I told him about the "great debates" that happen in this forum regarding carbonation, caffeine and straws...he just laughed. I'm almost 5 weeks post-op and have been enjoying my coffee in the mornings and my unsweetened iced tea with straws.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
