Two Years Four Months

Hi everyone, I know it has been a LONG time since I have posted. I have reached the weight where I want to be. However, during my journey I have developed a pyloric ulcer. To which I have not gotten resolved. I am due to under go another endoscopic procedure the 18th of this month. I was told that it was due to the taking NSAIDS.... Well now, I thought to myself. So now I have to take tylenol for any pain that I may have. Which is generally an occasional headache or joint pain due to running. I may add that the pain is intense at times. Pain when eating, not eating. To which I get no relief. I was taking omeperzole, carafate. They did very little. Pluse the feeling of I NEED to throw up to feel better. I don't know how long I have had the ulcer, the pain was getting more intense and I was losing sleep due to the pain. The doctor performing the procedure told me that if this ulcer perforated I would have to undergo another WLS, namely gastric bypass. So now I have to find out what other avenues are available to heal this ulcer once the second procedure is performed. My addtional weight loss I contribute to this little demon that lies in my stomach. Just wanted to share that if you develope any pain contact your surgeons office. I wish every one much success on their journey.... :D Deb I have also posted before and after Pics..... BeforeAfter

Wow! Look at you. I hope they can find a way for you to heal without further surgery.

Sorry to hear about the ulcer...but...Congratulations on your success!!! I am almost two weeks out so I have a long way to go to get to goal. I was having extreme cramps today and I could not take any of my usual meds...Motrin or Alleve! I ended up at my doctor's office in tears and she gave my tramadol - which is a non narcotic, non-NSAID medication. As a back up, she gave me a script for flexeril - which is a muscle relaxer. Happy to report that the tramadol worked! Check with your doctor to see if these are appropriate for you to use in the future. I pray that all goes well for you.

so are there certain pain meds we shouldn't be taking? I was never told this.

My surgeon told me up front that after the surgery I would never be able to take Motrin or Alleve again because of the high risk of ulcers. So it's either extra strength Tylenol or a prescription from my doc.

ldydrgnkpr, Congrats on staying at goal. I'm sorry to learn of your ulcer. Thank you for sharing the symptoms. It's easy to think all issues are behind us as we get further out from surgery, so it's good to know the symptoms of issues that can still crop up. I hope they are able to resolve the problem without surgery. I will be thinking of you.

HatheryOnHerWay, Every plan is different. My plan (Kaiser Fremont) does not prohibit NSAIDs or other ulcer-inducing drugs, but does require you to take a PPI with them (PPI: proton pump inhibitor, such as omeprazole).

Hey there nd sry for ur recent troubles; however, you look amazn. Ik this doesn't help but I'm preop nd one question I asked in the wl meeting was about nsaids bc I'd heard or read actually that we cudn ever take them again postop. He concurred, said we'd b more likely to ulcerate our bellies. Had any1 else heard this? I take them now for my knee pains so prayerfully the surgery will help alleviate if nit totally take away the pains. Gl sweety:). Again, u look smokn:)

I am not allowed to take nsaids per my surgeon's office. I will miss my Excedrin Migraine but luckily I haven't had a headache since surgery. My husband is allergic to nsaids so guess it works out for the best.

Every surgeon is different on what pain meds are allowed. If you are unsure, ask them. This isn't anything to be taken lightly. Where mine is situated is where the stomach empties into the small intestine. Which is why if it does perforate they would need to perform the gastric bypass. Pyloric ulcers are not uncommon. In fact a high percentage of people develope them in that area. I'm sure if I had not have had the sleeve it would've occured in another area. Just to be safe, always ask questions. Deb

Sorry to hear you are going through these ulcers. I had them too, I didn't mind the pain as much as the constant need to vomit.

At any rate, the drs gave me an antibiotic cocktail that I had to take for a few weeks. It sucks, cause antibiotics make me nauseous. But the regimen worked - my last endoscopy they did a biopsy and finally tested negative for it.

Good luck!!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
