Ramadan & First Year Sleeve

Recommended Posts

The holy month of Ramadan is just around the corner. For those of you that don't know - its Islamic month where Muslims fast from eating and drinking from sunrise to sunset.

For those of you that observe this month, how did you handle fasting your first year of being sleeved. I'm 6 months out and already have problems with my water/protein intake.

I know people that are ill are exempt from the fasting part, but since I've been 12 years old I've been fasting each year.

I fast this way once a week, I shock my body all the time to keep the losses going. I have never had a lull in weight loss cause of it.

I high carb high Protein 3-4 days, then low -0 carb really high Protein 3-4 days and 1 day fast 12 hours and do it all over again.

You will be just fine. Just eat REALLY HIGH protein meals at sunset.

I am not Muslim; please forgive me if I sound ignorant.. My boss & friend is Muslim and has had some health problems the past couple of years, so I know that he's struggled with this, but I have not interfered enough to ask what solution he came up with. I respect your devotion. I have heard that additional days can be added. Perhaps this one year, since you are so early out from surgery, you could at least take Water during the day and extend your daytime fasting period to make up for it? Or could you perhaps make up for it next year when you are further out from surgery?

I should clarify - the fasting is an obligations on healthy people that can handle. If a person is ill or if fasting negatively effects ones health - than they are exempt for the fasting part. If ones illness is short term, they can just make up the missed days later in the year. If its long term, than there are others ways to make it up - like feeding another person that is fasting...etc.

I'm just wondering if anyone found a way to stay hydrated (I live in Vegas and its really hotttt now) throughtouf the day. I must say its my biggest concern. Not too worried about the food part. I'm sure I can rack up the Proteins after sunset.

I would just worry about making up the fluids given your post-op status. I might talk with someone from your religious organization about the possibility of a medical exemption. I do understand the importance of religious practices, but you don't want to end up in the hospital from dehydration.

Nor does Allah (swt) want you to harm your body. The purpose of fasting is first and foremost for Him (swt) as ibadah but He (swt) also required it for us because it serves a major purpose towards the betterment of our health! Allah (swt) loves you too much to let you harm yourself to prove yourself to him, thus the reason for exemptions and the various ways to make your fasts up. I am getting sleeved on the 25th of July and inshallah plan on preparing meals/or donating money towards the meals for the fasting at our local mosque to make up for my missed days. Allah (swt) loves us all so much, it's amazing to see the various ways he has given us to make up for our responsibilities, even in Salat etc. What I'm getting at is, don't get over-worried about it. He (swt) knows the truth, and it is for these such reasons he has given such exemptions and ways to make up for the missed days and such.

You're only 6-months out. I don't think fasting for much of the day is suggested because there is no healthy way you would be able to make up you're Protein and Fluid intake in the short time from dusk to dawn, as you will be sleeping for much of that time anyways and you will end up stretching you're stomach attempting to stuff enough Protein laden items within it in that short time frame before your fast starts again. Dehydration is another health risk which will only make things worse even at it's lowest levels. If you become even slightly dehydrated during the day, you will risk losing your appetite, become overly nauseous and throwing up among many other symptoms which can easily lead you directly or indirectly in the ER. You do not want that! Nor does He (swt) want that from his devoted believers! Don't become too worried (As I did) over your fasting. Inshallah the efforts you make to make up for it will be rewarded as much as fasting for the full month of Ramadan, if not more for your efforts despite your health!

Islam has always kept your health first! Allah knows best!

Good luck! Inshallah you'll do just fine! :)

Suzy that's exciting to hear!

How long where you sleeved when Ramadan came last year?

Also, where you able to get in your full Water and Protein intake or did you come short?

I would think it would be very easy to fast - almost like cheating - since you don't feel hunger anymore. :-)

Great topic, Ms.Cali!! I'm not sleeved yet but I wondered how fasting would be after being sleeved.

Suzy2030 glad to hear fasting was easy for you after being sleeved.

I, too, have a question about Ramadan. I am being sleeved July 26th and so I'd like to fast until that date BUT I also have to do a few days of liquid diet. I'm not sure how that will work.I have an appointment next week with my surgeon so I'll ask him what his thoughts are on it.

Anyhow, any info and advice would be appreciated.

Oh and Ramadan kareem!! :)

Ramadan Kareem!!

I would fast up until the day you need to start your liquid diet! The day before surgery my surgeon hand me doing a cleanse - which was an all day thing too.

After surgery, you should follow Dr's. orders to the T when it comes to diet. This is a major surgery and I don't think you should fast at all. Remember, sick people are not to fast, and I think having major surgery puts you in that category :-)!

Your sleeve is healing and you should be constantly hydrating it throughout the day. You don't want to risk not healing properly. Hopefully you won't need any pain meds - but that's something I took every 6 hours that first few days too.

Inshallah months down the road when you are healed you can make up the missed days. But for now please focus on getting healthy right after surgery!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
