Has anyone gotten a lupron shot (it treats endometriosis) before, during or after their VSG?

I, too, have endometriosis and did a round of Lupron therapy several years ago. I wouldn't think anything about it would really impact VSG. I will say I had a terrible time with side effects and, personally, wouldn't do it again in a million years. I think it's one of those things people either love or hate. If you can muddle through it, it can help your symptoms. I couldn't live with the side effects and had an allergic reaction to some component of the injection, so it wasn't for me.

I did the one shot mega dose of Lupron...not to treat endo but to conceive (we did a FET last year). I actually had less side effects than I had in 2007 when I was morbidly obese. That time I was miserable with the side effects and felt horribly sick for days. This time, I couldn't even tell a real difference.

Oh, and I mean to add that if you're at/close to goal and Mirena is an option it is the only treatment I have ever tried that stopped the pain. It also (after a few weeks) stopped my cycle - so not only was I not experiencing the daily pain, I wasn't forced to endure that terrible ten days of the month, either.

Caveat: I had to have mine removed because while I was in early loss I simply could not lose and I felt more hormonal with it in. I can honestly say that my hormones were wacky the entire first year I was losing, though, so the only thing I can be sure it did was slow my already slow loss down. However, there are plenty of ladies here (check the powder Room) that use it and love it and have no problems.

Good luck,

Thanks! I am starting lupron next week. I'll do two rounds for a total of six months. I have stage two endo and my dr says this is the best way to get rid of it. And what better time then now to have a vsg? They don't want you pregnant too soon after surgery and the lupron will shut my system down.

Both of these are tools for me to get pregnant. 7 years of infertility is enough! We will be trying for a baby at the start of the new year.

I will ditto what Cheri said with the Mirena. It's been the best treatment for endometriosis symptoms that I've found. My Reproductive Endocrinologist said he also likes the latest version of the IUD without hormones, though I haven't personally tried it. I had a Mirena placed after the birth of my son about 10 years ago and loved it. I only had it removed, at the convincing of my ex, because he wanted to try for another baby.

I had a 2nd Mirena placed almost 3 years ago, after an ectopic pregnancy. That one was removed about a year or so later, during the latest surgery done by my RE the endometriosis and for an inguinal hernia repair. In kind of an interesting twist, that surgery is what ultimately led me to the sleeve. :) The surgeon who did my hernia repair (my RE doesn't do the hernia repair) typically does bariatric surgery and suggested it as an option for me. I had never heard of the sleeve until she suggested it.

With the Mirena, it's a very low dose of hormones and an extremely common side effect that periods are suppressed.

Both of these are tools for me to get pregnant. 7 years of infertility is enough! We will be trying for a baby at the start of the new year.

I did (or at least started) the 6 month rounds. I was diagnosed at 20 w/ Stage IV endo. I've had 5 laprascopic procedures for it. One was done specifically to get pregnant. :) I had surgery to remove the endometriosis and was lucky enough to get pregnant, with no additional intervention, within a month. I know some people are able to experience a remission of sorts post-childbirth, but that hasn't been my experience. My RE swears that the latest surgery he did is the newest, best technique and it likely won't grow back. It was widespread throughout my abdomen, including on my bowels. I will believe it won't come back when I see it, but I typically do get pain relief for a couple of years after surgery to kind of clean things up, for lack of a better term.

If your RE or GYN is on board with the VSG at the same time as the Lupron, I would think it's decent timing. My first thought, off the top of my head, is be prepared for hair loss. The Lupron can cause it, VSG can cause it, and together I think you'd be pretty sure to see that as a side effect.

As for post-VSG pregnancy, I know there's a specific forum on that. I think Cheri has some good experience on it, as well. Not that I'm volunteering her for questions, just saying I know that she's one of the many that has done it successfully post-op.

Good luck to you! I hope you get some relief from the endo. It can be miserable in itself, not to mention the emotional part of the side effects.

You can PM me with specific questions about pregnancy or look at the posts I made on the board.

I can say that I did NOT get the nice window of remission after delivery this time. I'm only three months post partum. I had been using Nuva Ring to control symptoms but it's not cutting it this time. I don't want to try any other hormonal treatments until I'm well into my weight loss window again (I'm just a few pounds away now, so soon but not yet) because I cannot lose weight on hormones.

My endo is causing me more pain than it has in years and years. Initially post VSG I did seem to experience a lessening of symptoms. And no lie, for about six months after my Mirena was removed I still felt no symptoms or pain. But now it's pure misery and I'm hoping to get back to my usual weight so I can have one put in again.

It's hard enough to enjoy "alone time" with my husband postpartum but the pain is just horrible this time. I'm also a bit concerned that my lower back pain is a sign that I have widespread adhesions...again. It's frustrating, and I don't really want another lap right now. At least they don't (yet!) appear to be on my bladder again - incontinence AND pain is not something I ever want to repeat!

Best of luck to the ladies here - I hope you can find something that works to control your symptoms and also helps you lose weight.

I have never had pain from my endo. My period cramps suck , and have gotten stronger since surgery in march but I don't have any pain outside of that time. The dr kept asking if sex hurt or if I had pain during the month and no. The only reason we did the lap was because after doing multiple ultrasounds to check on follicles (sometimes three a week) we noticed my left ovary was in the same exact place every time. Turns out when we had the lap he found the endo had "glued" both of my ovaries to my abdominal wall. And it had covered 2/3 of my uterus. He says lupron is my best shot at clearing up the mess. He is onboard with me getting the shot while doing the vsg since I'd need to be on birth control anyway.

I'm ready to get started though. I'm going to go look at hair pieces to help hide whatever I lose. I have hypothyroidism so it's going to be a triple whammy on the hair falling out.

So I just got my first three month lupron injection about 15 minutes ago. It wasn't so bad After I bawled my eyes out.

Now I'm just ready for it all to be over. How long was it before you all saw/felt any side affects??

For me, I saw side effects within about a week or so.

I am on my 2nd round of Lupron to help reduce menstrual cramps & long periods. So far, it's not working.. My friend said by the third dosage, I should feel the difference.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
