Butterflies and Rainbows with our American Drs.

I think a lot of times people rave about Mexico because its surprising. There's a stigma that your going to some third world country being cut with rusty blades lol. I'm sure they are just pleasantly surprised and want to share' date=' since its cheaper then self pay in the US. I'm lucky enough where my insurance covers 100% because I know I couldn't afford it. People almost expect US doctors to be good. That's why you don't hear so much. But I'll brag about my doctor! Dr. Angstadt from NY is amazing!! It may not be Texas, but it's just as good :)

And I agree with the previous poster, I've seen from very nice posts from you in the past! And congrats on your 3 year surgiversary![/quote']

I 100% agree with you. (I know, the fact that a complete stranger agrees will help you sleep soundly tonight! Ha!) It is unfortunate that we have become jaded to "planted" reviews, and if I was a running a business trying to compete in an über competitive marketplace I could see the allure of strategically positioning some glowing reviews for my product or service...and I'm sure that there is some of that included I'm the long-winded posts, but I think the vast majority are genuine and trying to compensate for the stigma.

I don't really understand this thread either. I had planned to go to Dallas as well. With all the research and posts from people nice enough to write detailed experiences, I decided to pay half the price to take a Mexican vacay! I was never asked to promote my doctor or asked to not write anything bad about him. When I was pre op I obsessed over reading those posts and genuinely appreciated them!

Are you angry you paid so much? What's the issue? Most of those threads are posted in the Mexico forum anyway. Since you were sleeved in the US why are you even reading those posts? You've really caused a stir on this site the past week. It's weird because usually you're so positive from what I've seen. It's like someone hacked your screen name or something. What's up?

Believe it or not, I got a "steal of a deal" with what I paid. We were living in WI and sleeve surgery wasn't popular at all up there....at that time. I attended a support group, pre- op and post-op. There was ONE lady who'd had it and her surgeon had to battle with the insurance company for it to be approved. Anyway, IF you could find a doctor that did our surgery, it was between 22K and 28K. Shocking, because it was so much less in the south, TX, TN, LA, GA. All over down here it was between 11K and 15K. I'm not sure why, but it is the most popular surgery here, with most of the support group people having had sleeve surgery, with 1 or 2 RNY and seldom ever a lapband patient. Before I decided to come to Dallas for sure, I check Madison, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and even Chicago, all were about double the price, some more than double and that is for cash pay! So, I was thrilled with the price, it felt like Christmas morning when I discovered there were options when insurance wouldn't pay because I wasn't big enough and didn't have pre existing health issues. Oh well.

My doc's cash price in OK is $9995. Doesn't include pre-op testing, but everything else (including two nights in the hospital) is included and he has a ton of experience. I've been shocked to see that the price is double that elsewhere in the US!

So, is the purpose of this thread to call out advertisers? To make fun of us who had a hotel stay? Or had it easier by not having to travel back and forth? Call people liars for saying it was a better experience there? I'm confused.

Why can't people let this go? If you don't agree just don't reply.

I'm not sure who you're talking to or which of us are confusing, but I for one traveled a lot. Back and forth from Wisconsin to Texas, four round trips to and from my surgeon before we moved back to TX, I stayed in a hotel over night every trip. A pretty good discount due to the nature of my stay. I've read through every post on this thread and I'm certain they are all plain and clear, nothing murky.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
