This ketosis breath is going to kill someone!

Recommended Posts

My teeth look awesome because I brush 10-15 times a day. Listerine breath strips don't touch it. Neither gum nor mints help. I don't even want to be in public.

Nothing is worse than catching a whiff of my own breath and wondering what died and then realizing it's my innards slowly rotting and wafting out of my mouth.

How long does this rotting corpse smell last and what can I do?

I don't know how long it lasts but I hear you. I'm glad I'm not seeing anyone right now because the only creature alive who could want to kiss me (and does) is my dog.

Ketosis breath is typically "sweet" smelling.....similar to juicy fruit gum, oddly enough. If you truly have ketosis breath....eat some carbs, you really shouldn't be in ketosis if you're getting 20g of carbs a day. This isn't the Atkins diet we're doing here.

However....I see you're recently sleeved and your body is going to be in upheaval..."Cleaning house" so to speak...it's common to have a bit more bacteria living in the oral region than usual causing some rank breath. Try a tongue brush and attempt to get waaaay back on your tongue without gagging yourself....you'd be amazed by how much gunk can live back there....also, a good mouthwash swish and gargle will help. This too shall pass...hang in there and best of luck.

Here's some info I found online, LipstickLady. The first section is about ketosis breath (or "keto-breath"), and the second part points out that an abundance of Protein causes ammonia-scented breath. Not much we can do about Protein, since we HAVE to have 60-80g a day, but thought it was interesting!

The good news is that keto-breath usually doesn't last forever. Most people find it dies down after a few weeks, or at the most a few months. The reason is unclear, but it seems our bodies adapt in some way. Children on a ketogenic diet for epilepsy have been shown to have less acetone in their breath as time goes on, for example. In the meantime, there are things you can do to minimize the impact of "keto-breath":

  1. Drink more water: try 8 glasses per day to see if this helps, and then you can experiment from that point.
  2. Natural breath fresheners to try include mint, parsley or other greens, cloves, cinnamon, and fennel seeds.
  3. Some people swear by breath capsules, which are usually made from parsley oil (e.g. Mint Assure) for keto-breath. Others find they do not help.
  4. sugar-free mints or gum can be tried, but watch the carbs in them.

When the body metabolizes protein, ammonia is produced. When people eat high-protein meals, there tends to be increased ammonia in their breath and/or urine. In large amounts, this can smell pretty bad.

It's important to remember that we don't need lots and lots of protein in our diets. Our bodies use protein to maintain and build muscles, to make enzymes, and for other structural and chemical needs. The body will convert excess protein to energy, which is where you will get the extra ammonia (this also happens during starvation or long exercise when the body begins to rely on breaking down muscles for energy if it runs out of sources of fats and/or carbohydrates).Sometimes people load up on protein because they are afraid to eat more fat. This is one of the reasons why it is rarely a good idea to try to eat a diet that is low in both carbohydrates and fats. The solution to "ammonia breath" for people on a low-carb diet is often to increase fats in the diet, and cut back some on protein foods.  http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/lowcarbliving/a/Is-Your-Low-Carb-Diet-Giving-You-Bad-Breath.htm

I am in the same boat. I saw my husband cover his nose and realized it was my bad breath. He tried to make me feel better but I don't know what to do about the bad breath. I am 4 days post op.

I had the same problem! So nasty! I ate more carbs and that took care of the problem.

Oh yes, I do!

<disclaimer> I am not a doctor, I don't play one on TV, nor do I have enough of the correct letters in my name to spell "doctor"</disclaimer>

Maybe you're brushing your teeth too much?

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
