Gotta get blood pressure down before 6/24 surgery

Recommended Posts

I just went for my preop appt Friday and I was put on lisinopril with the warning if my BP wasn't down by my surgery date, it would be postponed. Has anyone had this happen? I'm so scared now it will be delayed because I've been monitoring it all day and its still been 134/94 range today. I just started taking it Friday.

Can you refrain from sodium? It may be postponed bc they want to make she your heart can handle surgery. Good luck! Try vinegar and Water.< /p>

I'm definitely starting to watch it now. If I can prevent a delay I'm going to do whatever necessary to do that. I just wondered how long the BP meds take to start working in case what I'm doing doesn't help.

Cut out all table salt and salty foods and drink a lot of Water. Walk, or increase your walking if you already do, every day. Why didnt you ask your doctor for suggestions? You can still call them.

I'm supposed to follow up with my dr. Office on Wednesday so I will do that. He did tell me to start walking.

Do you have a structured ore-op diet? The good thing about BP is how quickly it can change (at least that is something I've noted for me). Agree w previous posters comments, but also cut out caffeine...is a stimulant that can elevate BP

I do have my preop diet I am supposed to start on 6/14 but I will definitely watch my salt and Water intake. I have been weening myself off sodas for the past 4 days so I'm going to work on everyone's suggestions. Thank you all!

Lisinopril is generally pretty effective, but if it's new to you and they put you on 10 mg, it may be a little low on the dose for you. You might need 20mg to see an effect. That being said, double up on all your healthy habits. Don't eat any processed food (the only real way you can avoid getting too much sodium). Drink as much Water as you can manage, and walk as much as you can possibly manage. Those have already been suggested, but you might also look into some yoga, breathing exercises, meditation, anything you can to bring down your stress level as well. 134/94 is a little high, but it's not terrible. I imagine with some really careful behavior changes and compliance with meds, you will be fine.

Best of luck!

Also, cut out processed foods...they are the biggest culprits for sodium In most Americans' diets...only 15% comes from table salt

This happened to me too. I went in for my pre-op and my BP was too high to even do the cardiac testing so I was referred to a cardiologist. I was really stressing because I only had a week until surgery (going in today!). I got into the cardiologist last Monday and was put on 2 meds after my stress test. I started them that day then went back last Thursday for a BP check and finally got the go-ahead for surgery. Talk about cutting it close! I've been on my pre-op diet and taking my meds this last week and it's finally the day!

You will do great!!

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
